octagon selection?

I would use the polygon tool. Select it and set the number of sides to 8 on the option bar, make sure you have paths selected on the option bar, and on the fly out menu, set a radius. Click and drag on the canvas to set the orientation.Then from the paths palette select Make Selection from the fly out menu.
