View Full Version : My first painting

This is the first time I have ever tried to paint something realistically. It has taken me a good 4 hours to get to this point. I know it needs to be darker, but I figured I'd best stick with the current set of colors and go back later to fix it...

I have never taken any art classes so if any of you have formal direction or books that can help me, I'd be grateful. I checked out three books from the library, but they were all about materials (which doesn't help since this was done in Photoshop). Also, if anyone could give me pointers on how to make the bottom left petal look like it's peeling away a bit more, that'd be great.

This is what I plan on doing:

-continue shading
-refine shadows
-refine color
-add texture so it doesn't look like plastic
-clean up edges

eep

I looked at the forum categories; does this stuff belong in 2D or in here?

I think it's ok here :)

now.. do you think you really need those black outlines? they give the pciture a comic look - if you're going for realism remove them!

Which ones? The ones at the top or the things I thought were shadows when I painted them in but apparently not :/

The ones at the top are just part of the sketch I did before painting

Maybe if you reduce the opacity of the dropshadow those black lines wont be so obvious

Oh. I get it. Sorry, I didn't use any effects or anything, just the mouse and teh brush...

So make the shadows near the petals less dark
