Thought I would try another photo of my drawing with different lighting. I cannot seem to get that down. How would someone go about taking a photo of the traditional work to get it into digital form if it is bigger than a scanner?

aggie93, her arms seem a bit too skinny. Her right shoulder looks smaller than her left one.
Other than that it's coming out nicely. I like the pose.

Rev - Thanks for leaving your construction lines in it. I think it is useful to see even the pros still do that.
Memorial-strife - Thanks. I noticed and tried to correct this weekend.
Here is an updated post. I started inking the outlines so I can scan it in to be painted in Painter.

Okay, what about this style. I threw this together real quick to get an idea. It is a little bit more comical and not as real. What do you think? I know there is some more refinement but...

Revliss
08-12-2008, 03:01 AM
i use open Open Canvas4.5 for that. it feel like the line work is bettern then in photoshop .. as for painting i don't know have not get to that stage yet.
aggie93
08-12-2008, 03:03 AM
So you do your line work in open canvas then export it to photoshop to paint or ink?
Revliss
08-12-2008, 03:14 AM
ink in Open Canvas which is what i am doing right now then try to color her in Open Canvas . if all things fail back to photoshop. well that my game plane any way :P

hey aggie where are you..no updates in SB's or here??
Hey Killer,
I started graduate school this semester and it is kicking my a$$. I am holding down a job, I own, 13 hours at graduate school, a pregnant wife and ten year old son, and I was recently elected 2nd vice president of our professional society here in Texas. I doodle a little but that is it. I started my graphic novel the other night when my son wanted me to teach him how to draw star wars. Here is what I have drawn so far:
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5647/img0928bv0.jpg
It is a drawing of Eve telling Cain to leave after killing his brother Able. The bible has much to do with my story.
I also did this little dilly for my son in his room a little while back. It is a star wars scene. It is a water base paint and the light sabers are glow in the dark paint.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/9154/img0927pq4.jpg
That is what I have been up to! It has been pretty quiet lately on this thread. By the way, what is SB?

yeah its been quite here cause i'v been really in experiment mode nowadays and don draw much of anything except abstract randomness that has nothing to do with manga/anime(u can see my SB to see what).but i am gettin my focus back..afterall,all traditional studies im doing is just to enhance my manga art
oh and SB is short for sketchbook :D hehe.i learnt it at conceptart.org

Syphilis360 - your work is striking:eek:. I wonder why you are so detailed in your head area and the foreshadowing of the limbs are exaggerated. I am sure it is your style but I wonder how you came up with it.
Rev - why did you want us to compare the pencil work with the digital line work?:curious: The eyes are fantastic by the way.
Here is another pencil sketch:cool:. This is a copy of Elsevilla's work from deviant art. I love his style:love:. I am still just playing around with styles. I have some story written down but I cannot seem to agree with myself:banghead: on how to draw the book, either fully manga or just illustrate it somehow... or it could be a hybrid of the two:shrug:. If you are interested, I can shoot whomever a copy of the draft to chapter one:deal:.

calling a cetain method of illustration as manga is technically incorrect as manga means comic in japanese, I prefer to call it the "japanese type" of illustration,
I'd even go so far as to label it as a subject that's for advanced illustrators as drawing in an exaggerrated from requires knowledge of proper anatomy, and contrary to what others would think I would really insist on the matter of before drawing on the eastern style you need to know your proper anatomy, there's just no excuse for going the short route, learn proper anatomy first before going on exaggerations

Ouch. This thread is to assist those that are seeking help in the eastern method of comics, us westerners call manga. We all are learning the human body as our foundation to any figurative art, including manga. Killer is correct that we have always stressed anatomy first. Killer has pointed out several times my own anatomical proportions that needed to be worked on. This thread is a workshop built for constructive critism. Let's all keep it that way!
Killer - Thanks for the suggestion but it appears that y'all come up with your own design. That is what I was referring to.

Neoutral - Some people work well off of more direct ways and others take offense to it and get discouraged. I believe you meant well but maybe tone it down and explain more in detail your teachings of manga. We can all learn from each other. Thanks for the input. Please post some of your work so we can learn from yours as well.

I guess everyone is busy. Well, I finished summer school and I am down to one last semester for graduate school. I will graduate in December with my Master's. I hope to start my doctorate just soon after.
My son is seven weeks old now. He is so much fun. All this has taken all my time so not much art work.
I had a vacation, of sorts, last week. I had to watch the kids in Houston while my wife went to a seminar. I had a chance to doodle on my manga character, Allu, in an action pose. I did not use any references.

I tought i'd never see such a topic here... The workshop idea was awesome, i've been copying some Daisuke Moriyama's and Kentaro Yabuki's styles over and over again without any expectations of ever being called an artist (I badly could understand perspective, have little knowledge of anatomy... and well i'm color blind ._.) I hope i could learn a lot of things by joining this workshop. Well, here goes some of my studies:
Character test
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/1116/ikkem.th.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/ikkem.jpg/)
Another character test
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/2636/wip2o.th.jpg (http://img32.imageshack.us/i/wip2o.jpg/)
And a "finished" concept art for 3d... (low chance of success in the 3d one =/)

Marchosias - these are good, especially the colored one when you are color blind. I am not color blind and i have a hard time getting the right colors down. Keep posting and commenting and this workshop will be beneficial for all of us.

Thanks aggie93, sure i will! About the colors, i can't take the credit, for now i'm working with sample images from where i get the colors, that's my plan until i get the idea and a basic palette from where i can start experimentation...
And a new sketch, this time with pencil & paper:

I think it will work out with the addition of shading and/or coloring. Are you going to scan this in and digitally ink and color it or will you do a traditional method?
I am glad we got some spark left in this thread, I think it will work out if we keep at it.
I am beat tonight so I will not go any further with this dialog. I will return later though... hopefully with some updates of what I have been doodling on.

I was thinking since now i have improved many folds and i have some free time i could re-create a thread for it an add some more new stuff in it as well :wip:
The BIG QUESTION is: is it needed??

I am taking some time off of school next semester and my plans are to start working on my manga. So, whatever you think we should do from this point.

HEY Amrinder..:wavey: .:)
I like your idea for this thread..Cartooning has a great history..Manga being one of the main facets in the jewel.., it deserves it's place, recognition, and standing in the art comunity, just as the many other forms of cartooning do.
Cartooning has a bright, and very profitable past, and future,..so I too can't understand why your thread has slowed down.
I am going down to the public library and check out a book that caught my eye the last time I was there...It was the history of Manga style cartooning...made me think of you and your thread when I saw it...:)
I have never tried my hand at it, but I think I will now,..so you can count on one new student being in your Manga thread, in the very near future..:)
Oh, and by the way,..here is a link to a thread over at ZBRUSH CENTRAL that just made the TOP ROW..I thought that you might find it interesting, as may others might who happen upon your thread in this forum.

So this thread is very special to me. I will also start churning out more artworks. Fanarts if not originals but wil be doing more and daring more.
i am really looking forward to what you will bring on this thread :) :bounce:

Hi Amrinder...:)
Went to the public library yesterday, and picked up a couple of books on Manga.
The Monter Book of More MANGA...edited by IKARI studio...and
Digital Manga Techniques...Hayden Scott-Baron
I was looking throught the art works in them, and on one of the pages, I saw a guy kneeling down next to a wolf.
So anyway, it sparked this image in my imagination...
I already have a wolf that I created and modeled in ZBRUSH, and a heroic girl figure,..so I just got creative, and came up with this piece that i'm posting.
I noticed that some of the newer MANGA does not have the oversized eyes and no nose, so I went with that aspect of what I saw and liked.
I will try out alot of the exagerated proportions, styizations, oversized eyes and no nose aspects of Manga as I go along, but for a first post in here, im going with this piece for now..You or anyone that gets involved in this thread, are more than welcome to do a paintover of it, or throw in any suggestions for improvements ect.
It's a brand new style and game to me at this point, so i'm open minded to any and all useful suggestions..:)

Im glad this style is instilling some interest in you. Many of the new mangas and anime's like Death note have more realistic proportions overall but another thing is that many new ones also lack a good story. Interestingly, i hav an autographed poster by of the lead animators of Tetsujin 28 (60's anime). if you see those characters, They had quite well built faces(nose, round faces) which has been lacking in recent generation of anime's. So, What i want to say is anime is more like form of expression open to everyone like an opensource program :D so no style is right or wrong.
In the images you have posted, since its an action pose it would hav been great if it had been dynamic with, maybe, a stressing expression on face. That would hav been more anime-isque :)
An example can the link below which is a screenshot from Princess mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki

Hi Amrinder..:)
I agree with you about the emotion depiction aspect that you mentioned...I will see what I can do about that...:)
Trying to get away from the classical approach to painting that i'm used to doing, and for this thread of Manga ,I will be going for a more graphic illustration use of color and technique.
Might take me a few tries, but I have alot of ideas in the back of my head that might with some luck and work get me there..:)

Hey guys great posts so far... again! Good to see you in here Spirit. You will bring a different look and make us jealous with your talents.
I just got my July issue of Imagin FX with the Manga studies. I will look it over and see if I can come up with anything that will help me. My problem is getting over the obsticle of realism to manga. Since most references come from real life, I tend to jump back into it (see my last piece on my thread). Killer you seem to be working on that too with your last piece here.
I will see what I can do over the next few days. I am going camping in the Rocky Mountains next week. That will give me some time to play around with the ol' paper and pencil.

killermachine
07-24-2010, 03:19 PM
yea iv done it a few times. you should do it .that way you will have a clear idea of how your character looks from every angle. From my own experience iv learnt that even if we "feel" how character looks from other angle, but cant really nail it before we have drawn that angle once.
That aside, you can get alot of them on google images for studying if you type "character sheets"
