Hi everybody
After 4 years at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, I'm ready to graduate. It was a great experience and I would like to thank all my teachers and my animation buddies. Thank you!
Here are some of my animations I worked on during the past semesters, combined on my demo reel. I will be looking for a job at the beginning of June, so if your interested, drop me a line... :-)
I'm still finishing up some new animations which I hope to include in my final reel, but I thought it would be good to get some feedback on my current reel before that. I hope you like it.
Simon

As usual, AWESOME work.
Animation is top notch! I love! the lottery guy.
(Theres a small motion blur glitch at the thief piece... FYI)
Lets see how long it takes till this reel gets plugged, any bets? I say.... 30 minutes from posting time.
You deserve all the applause.
Good luck with the job hunt.

Wow, this ist really nice.
Best piece of animaton I've seen for a long time. The facial expressions are very emotional and I didn't even notice, that the models are lowpoly while watching this.

Awesome work man!!! Great animation reel.
The first shot definitly shines the brightest. Those hand contacts...sweet.
If you had to shorten the reel I would say that the theif stuff isn't as strong as some of your other shots. The gag is funny, but I don't see as much personality in that character.
I also have a minor criticism in the use of the music. It seems at times like the dynamics of the sound are building and the visuals aren't following. The cook would be the best example. I started to expect a big action because of the building in the music.
Really nice work, good luck!!!

Thanks so much to all of you for all the nice comments, I'm glad you like my stuff.
Thanks also to SheepFactory for the plug. That was insanly quick.
Ranimate: Thanks for the kind words. I noticed the motion blur glitch too - to late tho.... Thanks for pointing it out.
Sternio: Thanks a lot, I'm glad u like it. I agree with the theif. I still have it in there cause it creates a nice ending... But I think it will be the next one to go once I have new stuff. I see also see what ur saying with the music. I just like it, cause it has a lot of energy... Thanks for the comment tho.

Pretty cool ...

Hey Simon. that's Norman, isn't it on the old man shot? So cool to see him in action. :D
Totally awesome reel and it apsolutely deserves the plug.
I have slight crit. :) On the very first animatino when he sais "crazy". The lips seem to make some other shapes, something like "cra - oo-a" or something. And in general the mouth feels just a tiny bit not defined enough, or just a tiny bit too general. not sure how to put it. But, on the other hand, that isn't really the main thing of the animation, so it's just a tiny ity bitty nitpick. Otherwise, the whole reel freak'n ROCKS!!! :buttrock:
[edit] oh and I forgot to mention that the reel is also extremely inspirational. I really needed a boost lately, thanks for that. :D
Excellent animation and physics.

SIMON!!!
Hey, awesome work! (as always) Good to see some new things from you. Your reel looks great. Im diggin’ your character design with Norman... I need to find out how you got those wrinkles in his forehead because it looks amazing. You’re finished with AAU this spring? Are you going to be partaking in the graduation ceremony? I hope so because I am. Maybe we can meet up for a few beers afterward;) You will not have any problems getting a job. You’re money baby! I’ll be looking for a job around then too. Maybe we can do a package deal- 2 for 1 kind of thing?
Great work man... oh yeah, btw, nice music:)

Thanks again for the wounderful comments from all of you.
Digiegg: Thanks a lot man! I work mostly at home and just hit the lab from time to time.
Harmonic01: Thanks for your comments. I am a fan of ur work! yea it's Norman. So much fun to animate with him! Leif and Morgan did an incredible job! Thanks also for your crit. I know you should never blame it on the model, but Hogan has kinda, sorta not the best mouth shapes... (lame excuse) I am working on another dialog with Norman right now, who has great shapes, so i will try hard to get the shapes down on that one...
salokcin82: NICK!!! Thanks a lot! Yea Norman is GREAT! Some people in the last P2 class figured out how to modify him. For the wrinkles, I just added more edges and pushed some of them in. Don't know how Morgan did it, but all the Blendshapes still work after that. So you can pretty much add what ever you need and change his whole face, without destroying the shapes. Big "thank you" to the people who showed me how to do that...

Awesome reel. I noticed one little glitch and I'm not sure if its the animation or a glitch in the movie, but when the gum gets stuck to the stand, the stand spazzes for a moment. Other than that, very expressive, great job! :D

woohoo it rocks man! I've already heard this music in a reel but i think it fits better in yours. The animation is just great, except the thief sequence (in the middle of the reel) at the end of the sequence. But it has already been said so just a "congratulations" and good luck for the job seeking :)

04-15-2006, 04:03 PM
Great work. Really natural feel through most of it. Few crits.
1) When the guy with the little red sticky ball tries to push it back on to that little wire tripod and the pripod is squashing and stretching, it looks like there's something weird happening to the tripod, like it flickers or freaks out for a split second.
2) When the penguid and ostrich are walking, I'm not a fan of the ostrich walk cycle. I think it's too side-to-side. I'd make it more like a long-legged, fancy butler would walk or something. Personal preference.
3) When the burgler is pulling at the safe and he flys back, he looks like he's flying back a tad too slow. Id speed that up just a little.
Again, fantastic work. You should be proud.

Simon!
Not sure if you remember me from a while ago over e-mail... but AWESOME work man. I would just add myself to the pile of people who have already told you things that might help with you reel. you might be able to get rid of the burgler piece, not just for the glitch but it's a weaker peice. Not that it's a bad piece, but in comparison to the rest of your great work. I agree with Harmonic about the mouth shapes as well.
Other than that man it kicks serious BUTT! ha ha. No problem whatsoever with the job search!
WOOOO HOOO!

P.S. That first piece makes me laugh every single time.

Impressive, to put it mildly.
I have been getting stuff from the academy for a while, I saw that guy in the demo real that they sent me from the school. Is he like a stock model students can use there? or did a student make him or what? Just curious.
I really like your stuff, I hope I am able to transfer there when the time is right.
Best of luck to you.

One more time, thanks so much to all you guys. I feel truly overwhelmed with all the positive feedback.
Jadetiger: Thanks so much man. Yea, there is a Motion Blur glitch in the red stretchy ball piece. Thanks for pointing it out.
Morganism: Thanks a lot Morgan. And a BIG BIG thank you for putting together Norman. Together with your Overloard rig, the best one to animate with!!! THANKS.
kc252: Thanks man. "Never seen anything better" HAHA :-) That's what I think when I look at your animation!
an6tzz: Thank you. The "jump frame" is a Motion Blur glitch. Since that piece is the next one to be replaced, the glitch will work itself out of the reel... :-)
DustinBrown: Thanks man, glad u like it. Also Thanks a lot for your crit.
bawhabmw: course I remember you. Thanks for your comments. Yea the burgler piece is the oldest one on the reel, and will be replaced soon... Also congrats on the new job!!! Very well done!!! Looking forward seeing your work on the big screen from now on.. :-)
timeless3d: thanks man. yea, Hogan (the robot) is provided from the school and a lot of people use him. I'm not sure who modeled and rigged him, but there must be a billion versions of him by now. Norman on the other hand was created by Morgan and Leif, two (ex-)students. He has mostly replaced Hogan now and is GREAT to animate with.
Thanks again to everybody for all the comments!

It is GREAT ...
Just one question. Are models yours ?
An animator (friend) once told me animators usually download finished models and animate it.
If this is the case please tell me download link for the characters...
They are all kinda simple and nice for animating.Would like to make some animation with them.
Cheers and keep up the wonderfull work
edit : by the way whose voice is that ? (the pirate guy)...sounds cool

Awsome reel man, you have some good comic timing.
I loved the cook, there is a build up that makes you expect something big, but I think it's funnier because of that...I have done what that cook does so often it's embarrassing.
