There are tons of rigging books out there. It also depends on how much you already know about maya and character rigging. If you already know the basics.. then I would say go with the 3d advanced rigging and deformations. if you don't.. start the 3d character setup.

or... if you want more of a mel reference that goes along with the rigging concepts.. try the art of rigging series.
