View Full Version : Water
I need to have some text for a logo project interact with water, In terms of water and interaction with polygons etc. I really have no experience. I have seen a few xpresso things out there, as well as the famous proximal shader experiments from Jeremy W., but call me dumb, I can't figure it out for the life of me. Does anyone have any experience in doing this, making polygonal objects (or nurbs or whatever) interact with a water or liquid substance. (I don't have the processing power, or money, to make realflow an option)

What kind of an interaction?
Like a water splash? or does it need to fall in water?
I guess you could go with cloth and metabals but I dont think it would be very productive.

This works to an extent. Proximal combined with SPD Noise, that is affected by the Logo's position.
Actually, I have to have it rise OUT of the water, not fall in haha. But no I am not looking for physically accurate, although I wouldn't complain either :-).

Priest:
Thanks for that file man, I think i am making a little headway, but not a terrible lot haha, if anyone else has ideas, don't hesitate to air them out here.

Now, I think I have a decent looking water texture. The real question now is for instance, what if I want to have say the water in a bowl or a pool or something, how can I get the water to interact with the sides of the container and create ripples? Ideally I would like ripples around my object, radiating outwards, and ripples coming off the sides of the walls that the liquid will be in. Would proximal work for this as well?
Thanks,

Hi,
this can be done using SoftBody Dynamics or Cloth:
Watch the Maxon highlight tour movie (http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/c4d/modules/dynamics/movie_softbody_pool.html)

You could give Next Limits' RealFlow3 functional evalution software a try - standalone fluid/ dynamics software that exports to/from Cinema via a plugin.

J3,
You might want to check out "Add the Sea" for C4D
http://www.motion-gimmick.net/english/plugins/addthesea/info.htm
http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/277/00277_00279.html
>>Add The Sea makes it easy to create an endless variety of wave effects by enabling the user to create multiple wave layers that interact with one another. Each of these layers has a particular type, such as linear, radial, curved waves, or even water droplets for rain that generates ripples when hitting the water surface.
Also possible is edge interaction, with support not only for open coastlines but also for closed perimeters such as lakes and rivers. In addition, objects can be made to float on top of the interacting wave layers in just a few click>>

I've produced this effect before using a realwave hypermesh with a surface daemon for particle generation based around collision with a proxy object for the text. This does not need to be as heavily subdivided as your actual camera text. You can also use regular realflow water particles to fill a volume with your text already inside, but the processing time is going to be much, much higher.

I used Add the Sea in this animation:
http://www.theiguanaden.com/pages/animations-tests.html (it takes a little while for the DL)
Nothing fantastic, but it was pretty easy to set up. The plane it's on needs a little more subdividing though.
Alright, I think I can get acess to Dynamics, if I ask nicely :-). Because I need to actually output this, I don't think I can use Realflow in a demo version, can't afford realflow. Bob: your add the sea stuff looks great, I will try that, it's just last time I tried add the sea, it just kept on dying and crashing everywhere so I haven't been back up that creek since then, but I will also try that.
Thanks y'all,

Yeah, Add the Sea took a little getting used to, but feel free to ask Dagmar at Motion-Gimmick. She is very helpful and will get you through any problems you might have.

Interesting...I need to show a cruiseship at sea. Maybe this plug is a good idea, I was going to use SPD and layered noise.

I have tried the "add the sea" plugin, but everytime I closed the scene, C4D would crash. I think the next release of C4D should include some fluid dynamics and the ability to control splashing. That would be a big plus seeing as water is in alot of our scenes.

I would contact Dagmar at Motion Gimmick and tell her. She's very helpful and will work with you until the problem is solved.
