Before anybody asks Roberto...I think this topic is the "essence of you", not necessarily a self portrait. Maybe you're enjoying a ride at the amusement park. Maybe you see yourself as a warrior...

Unfortunately, if I were to draw the essence of me I would end up drawing Forrest Gump.

I'd end up drawing a piece of manure. is that allowed?

ChristinaRH

I just tried a self portrait, cuz I don't have a essence right now.. (aka my imagination is left at school)

This is how I've drawn myself for many years now - as a cat. And that little deinonychus on the back of my chair is my conscience (who nips). Trying to focus more on lighting in all my next speed paints.

Nice sketches guys! I like them alot! daadaa has some wicked shadin' skills! Especially you're ComradeBitter. the one with the emo feeling, it's amazing!

Well, I had no picture reference. First of all, couldn't find any. Second of all, my recent pics are a few years old. Third of all, I think I know what I look like, hahahaa.

Joking aside, i looked at myself in the mirror for 9 seconds searching for small details and then just started drawing.: 33-35 minutes. From (2:10pm-2.43pm) for the sketching and coloring, Then I just quickly added the texture for a minute or less. It was done with a Wacom, done in Photoshop.

Note: "Sorry for the many edits, I keep forgetting the key things for posting stuff here"

I wasted my time eating potato chips and read stuff on the internet instead of doing my final project. I have a feeling I'll regret this.

32 minutes Photoshop+Painter.

ComradeBitter: Nice painting! hope your not feeling to blue...makes for good art tho

daadaa: Great! you captured a nice mood with this one

Vizon: Nice! the light is really working in this one.

ChristinaRH: Good Work!

pactum,

i hate your work.

da vinci is my idol. and i think artists should repsect him. if you can't pay honor to his works how will the rest of the world will respect your work.

just my opinion, i really hate people who do this.

especially his vitruvian man.

Oh come on, people are allowed to joke about the things they like... or should be.
Leonardo da Vinci is also one of my "Masters" and I don't see anything wrong whit playing whit one of his most famous works. It's like making fanart in a way

quality posts this thread!

ChristinaHR: it has potential, spend more time on it!
Vizon: nice lightning, nice cat too. maybe some more contrast would make it better.
daadaa: nice one, I like the way you blocked the clothes!
ComradeBitter: the emotion is really striking in this image, good job
Toniko: the reds hues work out really wel.
pipichu: hehe, yes well thats me too! great job, great art.
ham-e: the 2nd version is better indeed, keep proportions in mind. Did you use ref? Maybe some background will make it even better.
Sir P : very nice, nice dynamic image
pactum: lol! nice parody.
rawwad: yeah, no comments, awesome.reminds me a bit to liechtenstein.

Is it too late? I was really busy yesterday, we had a big family day and we got home and I was beat :)

Also, sorry its not my whole face, but I've never ever done an eye before like this, so I was kinda wanting to - and it is me! :)

Anyway, here is mine -- 34 mins, photoshop, photo reference of my own eye.

After two hours of doodling I think...

Mike this is really nice - so much wonderful detail - yet for some reason I really like the 35 minute paint. Even better than the +2 hours version. It just seems to have more character - less plastic and more natural. I think it has to do with being able to see the smirk-like wrinkles around the mouth - they seem lost on the 2nd piece. The look in the first one is more like...looking at a Crocodile Dundee/rancher with a sense of humor, whereas the second reminds me more of a perfect doll. I like the rougher, less boyish look of the looser paint. More gritty, ha ha...

But that's just me and my two cents.

MikeTheHunter
04-15-2006, 10:39 PM
Vizon - you are absolutelly right about all you wrote :) It does have more character with this roughness. The second one is like a doll indeed, HEH. I thought it will look like this, when I decided to finish it, but still I had to - I try to learn how to shade skin properly, not to make it look plastic. Like Linda Bergkvist and Natascha Roeoesli do. This goal's over the top for me now, but someday I might get what's it about finally. :)

Here's the update of the final piece.

okay, now i got a picture of you mike, if i will come to lodz once again in my life, i will search for you and take my creativitysucker with me to suck out your brain :D

no just joking, but maybe one day i will visit lodz a second time and maybe we are able to met each other then, would be cool i think

btw i love your work, also the rough one, but if you add to your second one some strings and wood details it will be a wonderful mike ragdoll :buttrock:

also sir patroclo's entry is very nice, a cool comic caricature (hope it's the right word in english :D ) :thumbs up:

Well, embarrassingly, it took a whole lot longer then 35 minutes to paint, and I forgot to save an intermediate image-- Ah, I'll have to be more careful next time.

At least the portrait came out looking pretty accurate.

Vizon, I really like how you've captured your inner self. I was afraid I'd see more self portraits and I was right. But you allowed yourself to be very vulnerable right now because we get to see a little deeper inside your spirit than most people would be comfortable with. Very brave and great job!

A cat does not disguise its feelings. Nor does a cat restrain itself if a person needs a good smacking on the head. If you see yourself as a cat, it's probably because you are unpredictable and impulsive...but in a fun way.

Interesting evaluation. It's kind of like a Rorshach test, eh? What do you see in this one?

:D

(I see a snake charmer sticking his flute through the decapitated head of a saint bernard. Wonder what that says about me...)

[Edit: Actually...maybe this isn't such a bad idea for a speed paint topic. Post an ink blot and then have the artists paint what they see. Hmmm...]
