Hey guys. I haven't posted anything in such a long time. I saw LOTR TTT about two days ago and I fell in love with Smeagol. I used a model of a face that I had from a previous project and I just molded it around until I came up with this. I need some C & C to tell me what I'm missing (other then a body). I wanna texture him and see what happens.

THANKS FOR READING.

work on it more, it could use some extra work, especially in the mouth area.

Here's an update.

I STILL NEED C & C. WHAT'S MISSING, AGAIN, ACCEPT FOR THE BODY?

Okay from top to bottom.

The shape of the skull looks boxy or contrived. It doesn't have a very organic shape. The skull should have a concave curve above the ears on the sides.

The entire face looks very flat. Gollum doesn't have a protruding nose or chin, but they come off his face more than what you've got there. For example, in the avatar pic there you can see some nice deep shadows under his brow. Where the nose meets the brow it needs to come up and under. If you don't get much shadows, something isn't working right.

His ears should definitely be BIGGER, and rotated out more so that from the front view you can see almost right into them.

Does he just swallow fish? or chew and rip off the meat with some teeth ? ;)

The lips need work, right now the mirrored geometry has created some strange inorganic "speedbumps" right in the middle, where there should be a cupid's bow. His jawline looks very straight and narrow (again, looks inorganic as opposed to a more curving line)

His chin looks boxy. Its more of a "V" shape and a little longer on the real one.

The most telling comment you made is that you took a head from a previous job and just "molded it" to look more like gollum's face. If thats the case, its getting there but still needs work.

Yeah, the face is far too symmetrical. You should also add some more structural detail to the face, at the moment it is rather devoid of any particular characteristics. Perhaps you could try accentuating the cheek bones more, bringing out the form of his brow some more (this will help to define his actual expression a lot more), and also add some definition to his cheeks. Look at some reference pics of him, and you will see that there are grooves which run from the corners of his mouth downwards, that really emphasis the transition from the cheeks to the jaw.

Also, as jfalconer mentioned, he needs some teeth! :)

The eyes look a little flat to me. It also looks like you nabbed the eye images straight off a picture of the character from the film... :curious: If this is the case, they are probably not going to look all that good close-up, because they will be too low-res...
You really need to add some depth to the eyes by modelling the lens seperate to the rest of the eyeball, since it looks like the current eyeball model is just a sphere. Modelling the lens seperately, and applying a glasslike surface to it gives a CG eyeball a great sense of depth, and therefore realism ;)

Can you give me a little more spacific crits on the mouth. I know something is wrong but I'm just not sure what to do to fix it. Thanks again for all the crits so far. I'll be posting an update later today.

Peace

Leigh - I actually drew my the textures, I rarely use photographs, actually I never have used a photograph. It's more authentic that way and it's 100% from scratch. I actually have 4 different parts in this eye. The sphere for the cornea, a cylinder for the iris and one for the pupil and a clear half(flattened) sphere for the clear part in front of the iris.

Thanks again for the comments.

Peace

u need to have less sharp definition of the lips, give it a more natural transition into the surrounding area, furthermore u should look into the corners of the mouth they're very sharp now..post a wireframe..maybe u need to rework ur topology in that area

the nose could still do with some work...get it away from that boxy look.

Reference pics are good, but I dont' use them to make my textures. I think in this update I took everything that was said into consideration. Somethings still need tweaking but I'll leave the CRITIQUING up to you guys. You've gotten me this far. Don't fail me now. See I told you I was gonna post an update tonight. It's 3:14AM but it's still night to me.
