View Full Version : Tip: Radiosity Fake
sanciok 12-31-2002, 04:05 AM I don't know if anyone know this tip... but anyway here it is what i came up with.
U'll need DiTools (now also for C4D r8), and, usindg the DiClone on a sphere with 8 segments, remember to use HALF shpere (delete the points!!!), scale it quite big (not too much) so that u have a decent dome, put a light in the cloner a ligth with specularity off, soft shadows (500x500) and a low luminosity.
Here is an example of this tecnique.
Ah... is useful in an open space!! :)
Tell me what u think!

Looking good - here's a link to boriscargo - he has made a similar plugin wich is very easy to use and you get good results. It uses a polygon object as a reference and creates lights to every point of the object - best results with a half sphere in my opinion..

The great thing about the Ditools solution is that you can actually use the texture to control the colors of your light sources. Great stuff, as this allows you to have diffuse lighting with a directional preference.

I don't think this technique simulates 'realistic' gi. The normal color bleeding from the blue cube to the floor can not be achieved with this technique.
I do like the first image though (if the matials colours are the same it gives a nice result)

i was going to say the same thing it makes a good soft lighting effect but the color bounce and reflection is not there

Here's a test Idid on fake radiosity but it isn't really fake, it's just radiosity with raytracing.
It's done with a material with 100% in reflection and sla 3d noise set to random in bump

Yeah I have gotten some mileage out of that idea for a while using 50grey.
Although DiTools does the same thing only with instance lights I think.
50grey actually uses the color of the texture on the light dome too. and has some cool controls over how the lights sampole the texture .
Doesn't work in V8 though.
You might try and set your floor to cast no shadows and then place extra lights under the floor itself to simulate some bounce. It isn't perfect but it will come through in a pinch:)

Just to remember, theres a plugin, called softRadiosity from Medienbunker which works very fine. Can be used for V6 to R8.
Its very fast and usable even for animations. Its downloadable, its key is 49 Euro.

:)
Riras: of course it does not simulate a realistic gi, but this tecnique is very fast in rendering. It is just a simple way to use a ligth dome! :bounce: :bounce:

here it is a different example. Used a Texture tag in the DiCloner. Also used a Light with sun tag.
The model is By Teyon Alexander. He did it in Rhino 2.0
A great modeler :) isn't it?
