View Full Version : optimise imported obj files
grimmud 04-13-2006, 03:17 PM Hi,
I purchase a set of furniture models from Dosch3D. I am working on a scene at the moment and importing alot of these files (which are in .obj format). There are now about 10 imported files and they seem to be very high poly count.
My computer can barely handle the scene, it is very slluggish. There is 1GB ram and a 256MB nVidia card which i though would be enough.
Can i optimise these imported files or should i try and get them in c4D format ?
thanks in advance

hummm, well I know that most people will disagree but frankly after having purchased a bunch of collections from dosch, I think most of them aren’t worth the money.
surrounding skies: 85% unusable, who needs nearly black blurry skies?
Private lives: the same models over and over, so you can't crowd them. The colors and contrast are totally unreal and each have to be desaturated, fixed by hand. who needs old farts with umbrellas battling winds?
Construction materials and stone and concrete: low res textures that do not seamlessly repeat!
Architecture details: few dull looking models weirdly set up + something strange about the materials can dramatically slow a render.
All these boxes are on a shelve gathering dust.

salut Laurent.
Can you please share with us some companies/websites you think sell good models and textures?
I am a Dosch customer as well, and would like to know some alternatives.
merci beaucoup

I have to agree with you here. I have some of their vehicle models, and even the c4d files themselves require a great deal of work to make them useable.. TONS of triangles, and strange texture tag selections. For what they cost, for that matter the fact that they cost at all, one shouldn't have to do so much work to them to make them useable.

Did you try the polygon reduction tool on the models you’re importing?
The most dependable source for anything is you. It takes some time to build a decent library but in the end it pays off, the only thing I don’t model are vehicles and trees. You can do better materials and personage spending some time with a digital camera.
Do a search on google for 3d models; there is a lot of good free stuff around available.

I purchased a set from these guys a long time ago, It wasn't bad at all then, maybe they're still good.

If it is from DOSCH, their should be .C4D files. You should use those instead.

I can open any .dxf or .3ds or .obj file then save it in cinema.
that in my book doesn't make it a "cinema" file it's just a .c4d whatever
some dosch collection have .c4d file but like GruvDOne said they aren't worth much.

hi laurent, concerning good models within cinema, i would say it depends what you are after, and if you can managed to convert file format from max to c4d (as a 3ds or an obj file)
concerning furnitures, evermotion archmodel ( i did test their freebies ) seems to be of really good qualities, and the obj format can easily be detriangulated evermotion (http://evermotion.org/) for the rest there is 3d02.com and turbosquid but it depends of the vendor, for example, some planes seems to be only some rip off flight simulator model while on the other hand "squir" for example sells real good and detailed cars
