kraal 12-30-2002, 09:38 PM the book cinema 4d 7 by Arndt uses the edge extrude plugin...can this now be replaced with versions 8's edge extrude????????

Nope. Arndt's Edge Extrude is different from the R8 Edge Extrude function.
the plugin should work in r8 though so you could just use it anyway.

by holding down ALT when extruding an edge from a legal mesh it does infact work like Arndts does with some extra functionality, biggest difference is that arndts let you do it to an illegal mesh.

Hey, I wouldn't be posting about illegal meshes in a public forum, what with the wireframe cops nosing around.

hey no problem lots of people probably don't know what an illegal mesh is, its not one of those life destroying things that comes up all the time.

Simply using R8's extrude you must use an edge with only one poly on it if you are using the ALT modifier (allowing you to extrude like arndt's plugin) Otherwise you see how the HN subdivides the object. Other problems you can encounter with illegal meshes besides poor subdivision, is smoothing and shadow artifacts in renders. so while you can use an illegal mesh, its not recommended, so they built in a saftey to prevent less informed users from making illegal meshes and then having to provide support to everyone about why it subdivides so poorly
