View Full Version : Mech: Evangelion Unit 01
gnarlycranium 12-30-2002, 08:55 PM MAX 4.2, poly modeling
I started this a long time ago, but I didn't updated for quite a while, and the old thread is kaput-- so, here it is again! Now, New and Improved, with Better Reference Pictures, and the start of Muscle-y Details! Woo! Now I just need a Bandai Perfect Grade model of the thing.. heheheh...
The head is the same as it was before, I will probably redo it completely. The arms from before were temporary, I'm making them again from scratch. The thighs are almost finished, though the mesh on its rear end is driving me nuts. Stay tuned for more updates!

Legs! I think I need to make the seams narrower... but apart from that, these here thighs are finished. I'll get to filling out the buttplate and the inner frame later. Next up: Kneepads!

I have a ton of various EVA models at home, I can't tell from this angle if it's really true, but the thigh seems just a little bigger than the models I have at home. Still, this is very cool to see it in 3D!!! Look forward to seeing more!

Really really good so far, the only comment i have to do is that the upper leg has too much muscles in relief, the eva 01 has not so much detail in muscles ,not in the anime serie nor in the banday models.
I don`t say it looks bad (i like it) , just that it`s different from the usual look of an Eva 01
Can`t wait to see it finished!

how cool! great looking EVA so far. I like the matte finish of the black against the shiney armor.
I hope when you texture it you make it all whethered and scratched to hell. EVAs get pretty beat up. Awesome!:bounce:

Ahah! I am now in the posession of a Kaiyodo test-type model.... the elbows don't flex, and neither does the waist, or the right shoulder... but oh well, it's something-- Perfect Grade Bandai will come later.. heheheh...
MrCup: This (http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/lib/mugentoys/00-58680.html) is where I got my good Front, Back, and Side template pics-- maybe it'll help!
ThirdEye_01: Well, it's the only program I've got, so :p, and thanks!
Eklettica: Thanks! And you're absolutely right about those muscle-y details, I need to tone them down...
Jamihn: I don't know a darn thing about texturing yet, but I'm sure going to try. Take a look at Eklettica's website, and check out the Unit 02 there.... THAT is how it's done, people!
And now-- update with kneepads as promised, AND the start of misshapen arms, AND in color just because I was sick of staring at it in black and white all the time.

If they ever made a live-action/ CG movie of Evangelion, you should be the one to it! The detail is so close to the original, keep it up!
P.s. Are you going to make an animation with it? That would be so awesome...

01-17-2003, 03:09 PM
ckaos@om -- Thanks! The head was difficult, without any physical reference to work with-- I did it from drawings, which of course weren't consistent with each other. I ended up using several different pictures for each part... a certain one would have a chin shape I liked, while another would have an eye area I liked, and so on. It took a while!
Renzsu -- I haven't built the back yet, but it's coming. After I work on the hands some, I'll start in on it.
Boone -- Awwwwww gawd that's one of the nicest things anybody's ever said to me! But you REALLY need to look at Eklettica's website (http://www.eklettica.com/), he has an image of what an Eva would really look like if it existed-- look on the 'Artworks' page, middle thumbnail in the second row. It's awesome! Eklettica has also been kind enough to gift me with reference help, for which he shall be lauded with much homage... I am hoping to animate this thing, but if I do, it will be the FIRST time I've ever rigged and moved something... so it's going to be a heck of a trip! :D
urgaffel -- as for the update... well, I'm kinda busy tonight, got a new house interior project to do, but I'm workin on it-- trying to get together some halfway decent hands!
Boone

(please keep up the great work...)
gnarlycranium
01-18-2003, 05:56 PM
Boone -- well.. no.. but I don't want to move my office I like my office where it is don't make me move my office I've worked here a long time okay so maybe I haven't, but I like to do the Evas even if Eklettica's are better, I'd really like to do them *trails off into mumbling* mumblemumble set the building on fire mumble mumble...
Well, I lied. I'm not updating the hands.. I'm working on the FEET! It's not much of an update, but it's something... it's feeeeets... or feets-pads anyway. Or whatever those green things are. Witness them!! Witness the holes in them!! (yes, I'm in a weird mood today) http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/crazy1.gif

kawnie dink? What is that? :)
I only did a quick scan of two image, and I notice the shape of the crotch area and the green-pad-thingy at the joint of the foot is different in the two images. Are you kind of implying that he copied the image? I highly doubt this is the case, I think they look similar because they both did a good job of recreating the 'original' object.

NileshXYZ -- Um... dood... if you'd checked the title of the thread, or read my posts, you'd know that I AM specifically trying to make exactly that critter... and I am not trying to claim it as my own idea. You know.. it's called fanart.
Actually, come to think of it... THAT guy is just copying the thing like I am, if you look at his website you'll see it says 'based on the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion', not 'I was contracted to do this for so-and-so company who made Neon Genesis Evangelion'.... If you want to see who REALLY came up with this stuff, check the disclaimer I've put at the top of the thread.
vorlon -- Yeah, I haven't even seen that particular pic before. I'm modeling mine from shots of an action figure, not that image. I'm hoping mine will turn out better than that one, actually!! :D Owwww, the lensflares hurt my eyes...

@Gnarly Cranium: Just a question to your references... Is the Bandai EVA-01 Perfect Grade Kit is the most detailed kit available? More detailed then the Kaiyody Action Figure? I am asking this, because I recently bought the Kaiyodo Figure, without knowing that there is a Perfect Grade kit from Bandai. :hmm:

As far as I know, it is indeed. It has a fully articulated metal skeleton, with a rubber inner suit that fits over that, with 200 pieces or so of plastic armoring and whatnot that snap over that, with some parts that have to be screwed on. Also, the power cable that plugs into the back is attached to a small box that holds batteries-- the eyes, red core in the chest, and symbols on the shoulders all light up! The whole rig is 14" tall, and will knock you back about $150 bucks. :D

Hello, people I don't want to sound repetative but I love Evangelion a hell of a lot. I don't have any models but I do have the entire box set and both movies on DVD. Your eva unit 01 head is so dam awsome but I think the feet suck, sorry but you need those orange soles on the bottom. Over all, HOLLY SHIT great work.
It has been my dream for a while now to make a supreme modle of All the Eva's.
It is really hard to decide what should be inside of eva 01's mouth because sometimes she has a lot of teeth, sometimes not a lot of teeth and sometimes just the red armor stuff. very wierd.
I am currently working on modleing Jhetelone(I think that is the name) it is the nuclear eva. I am starting with the foot and am having a lot of trouble with one part.
YOU MAKE ME SOOOO MAD. u are too good.

That's great modelling! I do think, however, that it resembles the plastic model more than a real EVA unit. Some of the gaps, especially the one on the neck, are found on the plastic model (so that the position of the model can be changed) only.
It would be great if there is an Evangelion Movie, even a short one. It would be hard though to get real actors who resemble those in the anime.
But I still want it! :scream:
Just one more thing--should we consider EVA as 'mech'? Does 'mech' implies that the subject is mechanical? If so, that's definitely not the case for EVA.

Hey Cranium. The Model's coming along really nice from what i see of it so far.
Just a suggesstion.... Seeing on how it's not a toy, and it's not 2D...Why not make the Eva's clad look very detailed....Like a Spandex, or like a tight potato sack bump, with slightly used and abused texturing......
I know it's still in the works. so i'll just say what i think.
Detail the hands more....I mean sick detail with vein lines running up the arm, And if you're going to animate it....I think it would be awsome if you can create a few blend shapes so it can have a heavy breating action.
You are a very gifted Modeler and i think this model can potentionally be, the greatest image of Evangelion ever made if the final test renders dosn't look like an ordinary plastic model.
Think big and think real i say.
Cool, Gnarly:buttrock: You've a few projects on the cook, eh?
Go with what the guy above says!
What's that Krugar says near the top of your thread- what on Earth is a kwinky dink?:surprised
hehe now that this thread got ressurected... I've been meaning to post my regards; Great work Gnarly! This is my fav model from you ;)
Ahh, I lub Eva, I own the whole series on VHS, whole series again on DVD plus the movies, have additional copies of Dvd's 1-4 (before I bought the box set), have the artbooks (Newtype, Adam, Eve, and the technical drawing ones), a couple of models, posters, another copy of the second movie on Vcd...

Your Unit 01 is better than his in my opinion. His Unit-02 is really top-notch.

"Just what the hell is an EVA?"
Man, I just watched this and we're all arguing so much about the endings...
How incredibly depressing...
holosynthetic
04-01-2003, 03:33 AM
the eva is an organic life form..just like the homo sapien..just with some physical alterations of coarse...its only somewhat considered a mech due to the armor plates on its body to hold it back from doing uncany things :)
MrMunkily
04-01-2003, 03:35 AM
I know.
I was quoting Katsuragi
At times you can see the bindings removed (blown off) from Unit 01's hands or arms, and it looks exactly like a bare human arm.
gnarlycranium
04-01-2003, 03:59 AM
Eklettica likes Unit 02 the best, he's not much of a fan of Unit 01... so it stands to reason he'd put a ton more work in that one. I keep that pic of it on the boat to just STARE at every so often... whew. Even if I can model the thing properly, texturing and lighting like that is a ways off for me!
Certainly, they're organic, but they've got mech stuff on the OUTSIDE... and they spend all their time running around beating up on mountain-sized aliens and robots and things just like most mecha do... I didn't wanna have to title the thread 'Organic Enslaved Monster Weapon Thingie' instead, so I just went with the closest category. :D

Could anyone explain me the film "The End of Evangelion:part 2" ?
Man... that is crazy...
Like everybody died and all memories and stuff
are a space tomb ?
omfg... im still trying to figure out...
hehe yea, from memory, I think my interpretation was... basically everyone dies, and Shinji had the choice to have everything destroyed (and I think, merge with rei, in an existance without people, etc), or have everything go back to the way it was, and so he chooses that (despite how miserable he was and everything) and then shinji and asuka survives, who are kinda like the new adam and eve...
Maximus Groff
04-15-2003, 05:00 PM
That is the most reasoning explanation ...
THANKS!
i will see again .. heheheh .. just checking...;)
nps ;) hehe it's such a crazy movie! :D
and somewhat disturbing too :p
Hmm eva is like a really, really twisted version of biblical armageddon, and there's alot of references borrowed there with like the sea turning to blood (or, full of blood?, anywayz), loads of people dying, there's the animals eating the flesh off the bones reference (with how the mass-produced animal-like eva's eat asuka's eva) and stuff like that :o
Maximus Groff
04-15-2003, 05:54 PM
The story is great...
Whats GAINAX doing this time ?
no idea :p
Production IG who did the art and animation (afaik?) still work on alot of projects tho :D I think they did the animation for 'Blood' but I might be wrong ;)

As for what the end of EoE really means... I don't think anyone has a proper answer since Anno (Director) intended it to be ambiguous. He certainly succeeded. I couldn't sleep properly for a week till I had drained my brain of EVA.
I'm of the opinion that Asuka & Shinji aren't the last one's on earth, but rahter that they are the first to return from the LCL - others will as well, if they have the will to do so.
Still. TI should never had happened - and that's a tradgedy that I don't quite understand. - eveyone wanted some form of TI and no one attempted to oppoe it in the least (except possibly Asuka but she had no idea what was going on other than defending herself) - It's kind of disturbing.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to more of unit 01.

You kidding? I've had that pic enshrined in my hard drive for over a year!
I don't suppose you'd consider printing some posters of that thing, Eklettica? I'd SO love to have it on my wall! :D
As for the copyright issues... I know somebody who has a fansite of some mech RPG game, they want to commission me to do some work for them-- and they've talked to the company, who told them it's fine for them to pay artists for the time spent making such work, as long as it's not resold. So... maybe if I pay you for the time it takes to print a poster (but not the content of the image) it'd be legal? :curious: Just an offhand thought... hmmmm...
Heck, either way you ought to show that pic to the company that makes Evangelion sometime... it's better than anything they've got.
As for updates.... for the next 2 weeks I'm very busy with work, and work-related weird career shifty craziness. I'm itching to work on this thing though, as soon as I get some free time I'll be going back to it. And don't worry... it's more than a foot!

I was working on an Eva 01, but it wasn't going terrible well... I think I might restart from scratch.
Also, I agree with the Perfect Grade Eva 01 being a great place to get reference stuffs from. I'm kinda really really bad with my money and bought one at Anime North last year($200 Canadian, tax free, not TOO bad). Except my horrible inability to actually paint stuff properly had it turn out like ass... I'm quite dissapointed, but it does make a good reference model. =)
Anyhoo, here's what I got, though yours is much much better:

Granted I'm still rather(well not new) lousy at this anyways.

Nice work. I too am working on recreating the Entire Eva cast, EVERYTHING, for a short non commercial movie which will be HAPPY. LW super cell shader is really great for this.
Why does no one ever want to model Eva-00? (too ****ed up, gets an S2 engine, goes beserk...)

In a way I almost hope that the thing about the movie isn't true... cause if it is, I'm totally outclassed by a bajillion miles before I even start. Blargh. :annoyed:
On the other hand, if it IS true... WOOOOOOOOHOOO!! :scream:

LOL I've never seen so many 3d evas at once. I'm pretty surprised that there's so many fans out there in the 3d community yet, not many 3d works floating around.....as for gainax
isn't their next thing fooli cooli or am I wrong on that? as for the live action movie all i can say is........waiting to see what they **** around with(as in, change from the original) as they always do in the movie industry.
