I have a bunch of objects selected, all duplicates of each other, not instances, but copies.

-I press W for the move tool
-I then hold down X for grid snap
-I grab ahold of the move tool center circle and move the object.

Then: All of the objects move to occupy the same space. i.e. all of the objects local axes central points, lock to each other, thus they all assume the same spacial coordinates. the move tool option is set to world, and keep object spacing is checked....whats going on please?! I try to move something and all the objects come together and form this big cluster f***...its the little things that piss you off :annoyed: :annoyed:

Thanks

hm strange :hmm:

try to delete the history? if you don't need it.....

or freeze the transformations before moving.........maybe it works ;)

I created two new objects, before which I reset their creation settings. A cube, and a Sphere (NURBS)

when I select them with a maquee (sp?) I press the up arrow to get to the top of the hierarchy for the box.

Then, with both objects selected, I type in a value into the channel box, both objects move to that value, thus they now share the same XYZ coordinates. Normally they wouldn't, the value entered in to the channel box would move both objects relative to each other so that the transform icon sits on the given coordinates, and not both objects.

Where is the option to turn this off?????????

I tried the reset, and freeze transformations...didn't help matters much.

Is it normal to have two of these things when I press Insert (see pic) Both of those pivot points are assuming the cordinates in the channel box...why?

thanks anyway

I found a work around...if you group the objects it works...but its still on the fritz....ANY SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED!

Yes.. of course it would all move to the same point.. (that's what you are telling it to do)

So the answer indeed is to group them and move the group to the new position.

Are you using 4.0 or 4.5? 4.0 snaps everything to the point your moving it to. 4.5 by default snaps everything relative to their points so you don't have to group it. It is an option in the move tool options.

4.5, I checked the "keep relative spacing" but it doesn't seem to make a difference....I thought that option ony was for when your moving components :surprised

You are alomst there as far as I can tell. But whenever you use the hotkey to snap to grid points, all the object will automatically go to that point. If you want them to snap to a specific line you have to grab the handle and not the center point. I think the relative spacing thing still wont work when you are trying to snap objects. That is just because you are overriding the function when using the hotkey.

Maybe I just didn't notice it until now...I was following this dudes tut (maya 4 fundimentals) and everything was going fine, I saved it, then I opened it again the next day and noticed the wierd ass snapping thing going on....the grouping idea works, but its kind of a pain in the ass to have to group everything, then un-group it when your done....

Isn't there anyway to have maya gridsnap multiple selections as if it were a group. ...like centering the transform thinggie as if it were a group and not just on the last selected object?

Thanks for all your help guys!

well, maya does snap the pivots of the selected transformation nodes (one for the sphere and one for the cube) - when you group your objects you create a new transformation node and now this transformation node's pivot gets snapped

if for some reason you can't group your objects and still want to be able to snap move them as a unit (quasi) you can move their pivots together and now they will retain their spacing

AFAIK "retain component spacing" does not apply to transformation nodes
