View Full Version : Completely Lost
jamina1 04-12-2006, 01:58 PM I've looked and looked and looked, and I can't find a single tutorial from start to finish that tells me how to rig a character in Maya. I'm a student, and can't afford any of the books that might have a tutorial in it, so I searched online to no avail.
I am COMPLETELY lost when it comes to rigging - never done it before. Where are some good tutorials so I can learn?
The character in question is a biped, if it helps.

honestly learning how to rig is a weird topic because it's up to you to decide how far you want to take it. just rigging to pose a model or something is one thing, while having a full fledged character with animation controls is quite another. in addition, a lot of people who want to learn rigging come from different levels of prior knowledge. a lot of the online tutorials go under a lot of assumptions about what you already know about 3d, so they aren't always understandable.
there's no really single online tutorial to do this stuff. honestly, i would really recommend getting "the art of rigging vol 1"... it's bordering expensive but it's absolutely worth it... it's a really in depth book and it comes with a helpful dvd with scene files and videos and stuff.
check half.com too, you can usually find books for cheaper than you could at barnes & noble or whatever.
if you want to try some online ones, check some of these links..

Have you looked in the help file? In maya 7 there appears to be some fairly specific information covering skeleton setup and kinesmatics, smooth skinning and weighting, cluster and blend shape deformations. Its all in tutorial format with a biped model you can use from the extras CD.
