The Journey Begins Challenge (2D) Entry: Shane Watson

Notes:
Thinking about "The Journey Begins" I asked myself when does a journey truly begin..? For me, it is in the days and moments preceeding actually embarking on the quest - those quiet times (and not so quiet!) when you contemplate what lays ahead for you...

With that in mind I let my mind wonder some. My ideas here were of a group of friends spending the evening planning, talking and anticipating where they will be traveling to on the following day. I wanted them to have a freespirited, care free air about them, so they ultimately ended up sitting around a camp fire. How much more care free can you get?!

In the distance we see another ship, perhaps like theirs, painted wildly, lifting off to some unknown horizon as the three watch.

This image is the concept sketch, and once cleaned up, also the line art.

this was my very first idea that popped into my head and i never got it down on paper (or wacom or whatever) i'm so glad someone's doing it. and making it sing from the looks of it.

Lovely concept and beautiful colors so far, my only comment is about the ship in the background. It looks like the guy that's laying down is pointing in the same direction as the ship, almost as if he is trying to point to the ship but at a different level if that makes sense :) This gives the image a flat feel for me, I think you should move the other ship so that it is not parallel to his arm by changing the position and the angle.

If you're meaning the ship that is luanching in the background, yes - I did intend for her to be pointing at it. I agree that it's coming out a little flater than I wanted, but I think I can fix that by giving the contrail a bit of an arc.

The issue that I'm having is that the characters seem to be looking almost straight up, and so since the ship is in the distance, there is no way they could be looking at it I feel.

I'm looking forward to seeing more updates on this one =) I like the mood I'm getting from it already -the roughed-in lighting really adds. Very quiet and contemplative.
