Kaydara has been pushing hard over the past couple of years in developing an interchange file format that would allow any 3D user to use a single format to go between any app. With more than 20 companies supporting FBX (or supporting it very soon), we realized that many of you needed an easy to use viewer that could be used to visualize your content without having to load it in your favorite app or render a video file.

We've made available a FREE plug-in to QuickTime that allows you to playback and navigate (yes you can more the camera around) thru FBX files.

The plug-in can be downloaded at :

Kaydara's FBX for QuickTime is a component plug-in for Apple QuickTime
that lets you playback synchronized 3D, audio, and video saved using the
FBX file format.

The component plug-in is a 3D viewer that renders in real-time, letting you
change your camera angle, turn lights on or off, and switch between different
takes of animation while playing.

##NOTE: The FBX for QuickTime component is available for QuickTime
versions 5.x and 6.0.

WHAT IS FBX?
------------

The FBX file format is a 3D data file format that lets you share 3D models,
scenes, animation, and motion data between 3D software applications.

FBX files are capable of storing multiple takes of 3D data for each object. FBX
files may also contain multiple cameras and lights. You can also set-up keyboard
triggering of takes using Kaydara software.

For more information about the FBX format, go to our website:

I downloaded the new FBX plugins to give this "interchange" format a go, but Maya hangs (read: crashes) on trying to load the Maya plugin in 4.5 (W2K).

From Kaydara's discussion forum
(www.kaydara.com/customer_services/forum)

----

I think I have located the problem. This worked for me.
If the MAYA_PLUG_IN_PATH environment variable is set,
the fbxmaya45.mll plug-in must be in the first path listed
in order to load.

example:

MAYA_PLUG_IN_PATH
C:\Program Files\AliasWavefront\Maya4.5\bin\plug-ins;C:\Program Files\ThirdParty\otherPlugins;C:\Program Files\ThirdParty\morePluginsETC;

If the fbxmaya45.mll plug-in is not in the first path listed,
Maya goes into 100% CPU usage, hangs and never comes back.
