Been looking forward to this one. The registration fee is an absolute steal, too, imo, especially when taking into account the student discount. In addition to the names you mentioned, Robert Chang (Lunatique) and Daniel Martinez Lara (of Pepeland) are also conducting workshops.

Halo LoTekk,
Yup, that's right, consisting the number of guest speakers (4 speakers per day) holding the talks there. For newbies, you will get to know more about the oversea industry like Japan animation and games industry. In their knowledge workshops, they cover from modelling, animation to concept design and visual effects....quite an intensive package:P
P.S. check out the prices....they have just lowered the prices further....the prices are in Sing dollars.

I'm pretty excited about CGOverdrive, since I've never been to Singapore before. Too bad I might have to go alone and leave Elena at home. :( I'll try and pack in as much cool stuff into my workshop as possible to make it worthwhile for you guys. :)

Barring "Act Of God" I'll be attending too, with my family. Well, they won't be at the conference but in Singapore - they love the place, and take any excuse to go there. :)
To anyone who's going there:
For the love of Pete, don't miss the brasilian chiarroscura restaurant "Carnivore" at the Chijmes.

Well, she's already been to Singapore before (this was before we met), so she's not really missing out on much--except for CGOverdrive itself--which isn't nearly as interesting to her as shopping is. :D I'll most likely only stay for a couple of days, but it really depends on how many days I could get off from work (I have no idea what/where my next job is yet. I'll be sending out my resume in a few weeks). Vacation is not very fun without my Kity Cat, so I probably wouldn't be staying long even if it wasn't because of work.

I have to confess. The only reason I got mine today was because I swung by the school to drop off my early bird registration. Today. The very last day. :p So they actually handed it to me right there and then. :p

Greetings,
I just signed up for the cgoverdrive conference last week from Australia, Perth. I wouldn't mind meeting up before the conference if everyone is for the idea. My wife and my toddler son will use this opportunity to catch up with her side of the family.
Lo Tek, since you are the only one in this discussion thread from Singapore, :-), I hope you don't mind if I ask you this question.
I am looking for a condusive environment to work on my 3d animation project while I am in Singapore for 2 weeks, and I was wondering whether places like the singapore national library will be a good place to work with a laptop, or any other school venues like university facilities or libraries. I wouldn't mind paying some fee to cover the use of facility's venue if it is within budget. I know that this may be a weird thing to ask, but I thought I ask anyway.
cheers,
Robin

Hey Robin I think the national library would be good. You might wanna try Changi Airport too, lots of students go there to study although the location might be inconvenient.
Btw, any plans on a meet up everyone? I have some free time on my hands so maybe I can organise something. Feel free to pm or msn me if you're keen.

Hey guys, I'll be staying at The Gallery Hotel: http://www.galleryhotel.com.sg
If anyone wants to find me, that's the place to look (or at the conference during the conference hours). I don't know what room # yet since the kind folks of CGOverdrive took care of it all for me. I'll be arriving in Singapore at noon on the 13th, and leaving on the 17th at 1:10 PM.
I'll try to check my email when I'm in Singapore (although I won't be bringing a laptop with me--my Canon 1D MKII and lenses are already very heavy to carry around) at a internet cafe, so you can also email me if you want to get together but can't attend the conference.
BTW, what's the best musical instrument store with the largest selections around that area (synths, drums, guitars..etc)?
What about the best shopping malls?
The best DVD/CD shops (big chain stores and shady mom & pop shops)?
Best bookstores?

Hi Peter!
thanks for the advise. I will definitely try out the national library. It looks like schedule is going to be tide to catch up prior to the conference. I am free to catch up with anyone during the conference day/evening or after the conference :-). Peter, let me know if you are interested to meet up, or I will try to look out for you during the conference itself. Looking forward for your session Robert. :-). Looks like a nice hotel. Bookstore, from my limited visit to Singapore, the bookshop I always go to is Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City (391 Orchard Rd). Its inside the shopping center itself. They have a good range of design/art/architecture/anime/animation related books. I used to spend hours there, not enough time indeed.
http://www.kinokuniya.com.sg/site/?m=100&f=100
Our fellow Singaporian creatives here might be better at directing you to the book shop. :-)

just found out today that My artwork, Rage over Babylon is one of the shortlisted entries that will be displayed there !

Robin:
Sorry! Didn't catch the responses on this thread til now. Like Peter said, the National Library would probably be perfect. The new building is huge, and wired up the wazoo.
Rob:
Robin already pointed out Kinokuniya. Then of course there's a pretty large Borders just down the road from that. There's an HMV and a Tower Records & Books in the same area, for CDs/DVDs. I'm not incredibly familiar with the music stores, but I think my friend mentioned that there were a couple decent ones at Centerpoint (also along Orchard Road). And the major malls are all in that area, really, though which ones in particular will depend on what you're shopping for.
Now that you've told everyone where you're staying, we'll just hang around the entrance and mob you when you arrive. :D I keed, I keed. I'll drop you a PM with my cellphone number, on the off chance you need a local contact.
dom:
Ah, sucks you won't be here, was looking forward to meeting you.
Peter:
I was gonna offer to handle meetup arrangements, but since you've so kindly jumped on that grenade, feel free. :D I'll PM you my MSN and cellphone.

Thanks guys! That Orchard Road must be some super duper shopping district. Can't wait to hit it! I'm dreading the Southeast Asian weather though--I lived in Malaysia for several months and it was just painful. Being jetlagged will make it even worse. I hope I don't pass out in the middle of the street. :D
A warning beforehand--I'm not much of a drinker, so don't anyone try to get me drunk!
And I'll be brining my Canon 1D Mark II / lenses / Speedlite 580 / Lightsphere II, so if you know any cute girls that wants to get some pretty photographs taken of them, send them my way. If the boyfriend objects, he'll just have to get in the shots too--makes very cute photos for the lovely couple. :D

Other than the shops Ken has mentioned, there's also a music store at Peace Centre at the edge of town. I haven't visited it myself but a friend has recommended it.
So anyway, here's what I was thinking for a meetup. We could do dinner on Thurs, 13th July at 1) Brewerkz (excellent ale, good food, reasonable price) or 2) Churrascaria (great place for meat lovers but a bit more pricey i think). Any other suggestions?
Whoever's interested please let me know so I can start organising. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I'm posting here only because i have 2 CG Overdrive passes BUT i can't attend. I know the event starts today so i don't want the passes to go to waste. Does anybody know of friends who want to go for the 2 remaining days?
I hope to do you all a favour too by making your CG Overdrive visit cheaper, and I hope you all will do me a favour and not let e passes be wasted.
If it's not too unreasonable, I'm thinking of giving away the 2 passes for abt $200 for BOTH, esp considering it'll be only 2 days left. I haven't used the passes at all.
Please try to make use of my passes otherwise it'll be totally wasted..
Because the event has already started today, call my hp at 94551141 so tt i can give them to you either by today or tmr morning.
I really hope to see the passes being used by people who will appreciate gg to the CG Conference.

Ordinarily I'd be like "GIVE ME THOSE" but I'm saving up for soooo much crap on this side of the fence...I do know someone who might be interested, I'll ask.
EDIT: For those of you who're interested, I have pics of the event up on my Photobucket album; they aren't taken very well because I was generally trying not to attract attention and thus had to take them fast. I'll try to get better shots tomorrow, especially of the artwork on display; my current shots don't do them justice at all.

Those were the free clinics, that one in particular was the Zbrush clinic, it's free admission, you have to go inside MR7 (Meeting Room). It's near the movie screening area.
Yes I am attending every day of the event, but not at every hour. I want to catch the Flash clinic and MAX clinic tomorrow, but 3dsense's ZBrush demo so far has not been very encouraging, their spokesman kept mumbling to himself and you could hardly comprehend what he was saying.
EDIT: The second shot was taken at the AMD booth, jason and edwardo were there working on something in MAX. I got a chance to talk to both of them, too! :D
EDIT #2: Just finished uploading about 50 more photos.
EDIT #3: Wtf photobucket goes down for maintainence just as I finish uploading. Typical.

Hoorah! After attending the first day of CGOD, I have to say that it was really great. I particularly enjoyed the talk with Carlos Bana(sp) and Shuzo Shiota. Carlos is just plain outright funny, and Shuzo was totally cool.
I probably can't speak for everyone here, but I really did appreciate all the information he gave on the animation industry in Japan. I'd never have known what it was like in the home of Anime otherwise. I've always wondered about how it would be like to work in Japan, and I have to thank Shuzo for shedding some light about the Bad and the Good about the industry in his country, rather than just coming down and saying , "Hey I'm from Japan! Here's a buncha cool stuff we did! Isn't that Great!"
And of course Robert :). It was great how you shared your workflow, and I feel that what you shared about your photographic knowledge from studio photography and how it helped you as an artist and vice versa was really interesting. I feel this because for the most part, most CG artists, myself included, in particular beginners, aren't very knowledgable about lighting and composition. I've tried in my own way to discover this bit about lighting, but as it is now, I still am no where near accomplished in plying this little that I know into something beautiful.
Anyways, I'd like to thank the organisers and hope that the 2nd and 3rd day will prove to be as enriching :)

What a great time it was... meeting all you guys, Brewerkz, the conference... here a few pics I snapped during the 15th and 16th.
Many times I would hear my name like this: "Mr. Stahlberg?" I would turn around and not recognize the person... slightly embarrassing but cool that they know me. In Sweden we have a saying: everyone knows the monkey but the monkey knows no one. lol
BUT - if they ask to take a picture of me, I get to take a picture of them too, right? Fair trade.
It started on the train to the conference, with this cool group of Indonesian guys (my friend Moayad on the right, one of the founders of Truemax academy in Copenhagen, who just happened to be visiting Malaysia during this time):

Steven, Robert, awesome meeting both of you, especially since you were both such a huge help and inspiration to me back when I was just getting into digital art on sijun. More pics! :D
The conference itself was awesome, with some really great presentations. I think Feng really stood out for me simply because he was able to cover such a wide range of topics while pretty much painting and sketching non-stop. Carlos Baena and Andrew Gordon gave some amazingly entertaining and informative presentations, as did Daniel Martinez Lara. Drooling over and trying out the 21" Cintiq on the first morning was nice, too. :D

As a student, I couldnt afford the ticket at first, but then I became the luckiest bastard in the world to have been able to attend the 2nd and 3rd day for free!!! My friend who couldn't attend, passed me his ticket so it wouldnt go to waste :D However, since I didnt plan to attend at first, I didn't know you guys were meeting on saturday. Would've been great to meet everyone :(
It was one cool event. Met a lot of people and gained quite a fair bit of knowledge. Was too shy to go upto Mr Stahlberg and introduce myself. I guess his powerful aura was too much...lol.
Feng Zhu was the best IMO. Feng, if you are reading this...you ROCK dude!!! The advice you gave to those who get themselves involved into cg (without knowing what they are getting into) was very memorable. I won't ever forget those words!
I wish there were more animation focused workshops (me being an animator and all :p) Anyways, thanks to all the speakers. Next time, I wont wait for a free ticket to come along. :)

Most of the speakers went to the Night Safari one night. No flas allowed, so I had to jack the ISO up to 3200, stay around 1/30s, and manual focus, which was extremely hard in such a dark environment.

And that's it!
As you can see, the camera is only part of the equation, as I can take really crappy photos with an expensive camera too. It does offer you more control, speed, and accuracy, but the picture quality isn't all that different from the entry-level DSLR's.
A small tip for those of you that want better nigh-time or low-light photos that's natural looking yet bright enough to not blur--get a standalone hotshoe flash--preferably one that lets you dial up or down the exposure compensation. That's what I do for my photos. I keep it at about -2 or -3 flash exposure compensation (you set it on the flash unit itself), and then have the ISO around 640~800 (or more if it's really dark), and keep the shutter at about 1/30~1/60. If you go shorter than 1/60, you'll end up not taking in enough of the ambient lighting and you'll get that typical "washed out pale flash photo". Setting the negative flash compensation is key here--it lets you shoot at a very low power from the flash, thus won't overwhelm the ambient lighting. If you can bounce it off a wall or ceiling, even better--it'll give you very flattering, soft light that mixes in with the ambient light.
Of course, sometimes I'm too lazy to carry around a huge flash unit (mine is the Speedlite 580EX), so I just bump up the ISO as high as I need to and snap away. That's ok if the scene is not extremely dark, otherwise you really need a flash unit to take decent photos. On-camera flash on entry level/mid-level cameras might or might not allow you to set flash exposure compensation. If not, then the on-camera flash is pretty much useless except for that pale, harsh look. Or, there might be other ways to set the camera so the flash isn't so overpowering (for example, metering for fill flash). Not being able to bounce the flash in different direction can also be a bummer. A hotshoe flash will solve all those problems. You don't need something as fancy as the Speedlite 580EX--any lower end model that allows flash compensation and flash head rotation is fine.
One more night-time/low-light shooting tip for Canon DSLR users--even entry-level DSLR's from Canon should be able to shoot at ISO 3200--I think you have to access it in the custom settings area. Shooting at 3200 ISO might be grainy, but at least you don't get a blurry mess (and you can remove grain later in post processing with something like Noise Ninja or Grain Surgery). If you're only showing the photos online, they actually look pretty decent resized down to web-size. If you don't have a fairly fast lens, definitely get one. Even a cheap $75 prime lens like the EF 50mm f/1.8 is way better than any zoom lens that can only go up to f/2.8. Many of the cheaper lenses can't even do f/4.0 at the long end of the zoom. A fast prime lens should be in everyone's photography kit--even an el cheapo one is better than 90% of the zooms.

I definitely had fun--it was very nice meeting all of you. I shouldn't have drank and smoked that night though--my throad and sinus was very painful for the next few days.
I had to leave early on the third day because all of my memory cards got filled up and I had to go back to the hotel to dump them into my digital wallet so I can take more photos that night at the Night Safari--which was fun. It's interesting to hang out with other speakers doing something totally unrelated to CG, because you get to interact with them as normal human beings, not legendary superstars. It's worth it just to see Andrew and Feng jump out of their skins as the bats swoop down nearby. :D
For those that managed to catch my presentation, feel free to email me your feedback--it'll help me make future presentations even better.
