I want to select a sparce number of vertexes from an object.
Then duplicate another object multiple times, with each instance centered on those selected vertexes on the other object.

Is there a "nice easy" way of doing this?

Cheers.

1. Duplicate your object.
2. Enter edit mode (Tab)
3. From the Mesh menu, choose "Select Random" and set your percentage.
4. Do "Swap Select".
5. Delete the selected vertices, leaving you with an object made up of only the original random selection.
6. Make new sparse object the parent of one you want to duplicate.
7. Turn on "Dupliverts".

Voila.

8. If you want to make the duped object "real", choose "Make Duplis Real", but I don't the key command for that off the top of my head.

(BTW, an experienced Blenderer can do this in less than ten seconds, so I'd say this qualifies as the simple way)

Harkyman has pretty much covered it, but I would just like to add that the key press combination he mentioned is Ctrl-Shift-A (one of Blenders well hidden features). Incidentally This creates a number of 'linked' copies of the same object, so if you edit one they all change. If you wish to make an object unique then press U while it is selected and choose the 'Object & ObData' option.
