As reported by The Australian, an entire manuscript of Tolkein's lost work has been found in an Oxford University library.

"The 2000 handwritten pages include Tolkien's translation and appraisal of Beowulf, the epic 8th century Anglo-Saxon poem of bravery, friendship and monster-slaying that is thought to have inspired The Lord of the Rings."

Cool. It's amazing that 2000 handwritten pages were lying in the bottom of a box in Oxford for all those years!

perhaps his translation is more reasable than the others I've seen;)

and hey, it's cool to draw attention to one of the classics by saying "look, it was translated by Tolkien!" this couldn't have happened at a better time!;)

bentllama,
yeah, I will admit to seeing it. I would avoid it if I were you. its an interesting retaleing of the story, set in a future torn by war, with only a few feudal cities left. other than that, its pretty much about Beowulf fighting grendel and the witchmother and thats it

twipup, I saw it too. I was just curious about other people opinions on it...

...it is just sad to see Christopher Lambert carry so many B movies of late...

LOL, one of my friends convinced an unsuspecting teacher to play that movie in an English class as a supposed tie-in to the current material we were studying. Needless to say, we had a good laugh

I believe a large part of LotR was also inspired by the Kalevala, and definitely the Elvish language influenced by Finnish. This is my favorite book of all time, so if anyone is interested, I highly recommend it! It's got the same heart-wrenching stories and legendary action scenes as Tolkein's own works, and will tide you over until the third film comes out. Cheers!

This isn't such a big news.
Tolkien was many times busy with Beowulf, remember he was a linguist professor in Oxford.
Beside that in some essays he writes about Beowulf and there are also some similarity points to find in LOTR.

BTW, if you like the beowulf story, check out "Grendel" by John Gardner. A brilliant retelling of the story from Grendel's point of view filled with irony, humor and an interesting (read: sarcastic) take on existentialism. Grendel's conversations with the dragon are some of the funniest pages I've read in a long time.
