It's on!:scream:

This here thread is to store the collective input of the mighty battle of Self Portraits between Erilaz, Gorgnut and LoTekk:

The Challenge
A Self-Portrait a day for 2 months (Until the CA Montreal Workshop).
Rules:

You MUST submit a portait a day, even if it's only a quick sketch.
If you miss a day, you must submit TWO the following day, and so forth accumilatively.
You may do more than one SP a day, but that doesn't mean you can skimp in the following days.
Digital and Traditional are allowed, but try to mix.
No previous work! Start from NOW.

Gentlemen and Gentlewomen, bring it.:D

I'm expecting anyone who posts in this thread to continue to draw every day in accordance with the rules!

(Kimmie is excused, since it's her forum and she can do as she pleases).

Of course, you can choose to ignore this polite request, but the whole point of the thread is to do rigid and ongoing practice without excuses or procrastination. Do yourself a favour and keep it up every day. You don't have to POST every day, but draw every day if you can.

I will be vigourously encouraging posters, including Rebecca, to continue to do daily posts.

Murat,

This is really nicely done, and stop putting yourself down. :curious:  Nice work with the proportions, and maybe instead of doing a portrait a day, you can work on this a little more each day (say, for two weeks) and then present a final one at the end of that set period of time. Better than having a 'stack' of unfinished work, I say! (Martin might kill me). Maybe you could show progress everyday?

A caffeine-induced psychotic masochis accelerated by the dieretic qualities of tanine in the leaves perhaps?
Awesome work Llynna, if not a little confronting!
Mu... brilliant! Keep it up dude, you're really good!
aggie93,Neato! Now try and take a little longer! You've got a thing going, so keep it up! The mroe you focus the beter it will get!
Classic Marlon. You rock various Kasbahs.:D

Remember people... I'm not doing this challenge to be hard on you... I'm doing it to be hard on myself. If you can be equally vicious to yourself, then by all means go for it, but i'm not stopping your from doing less than you're able. If you have to take days off, go for it. The only reason I am doing this to myself is because I can't afford to waste anymore time in my own self-procrastination and lackadaisical meandering. I have no discipline or focus. This challenge helps me to do that.

Like i said before: This weekend is special. People have commitments. I have commitments myself which I can't ignore.
You do not have to post every day. Make up the time you miss later.

And have FUN for all the gods sakes! This isn't supposed to be a slave drive! Try and find out WHY you can or cannot draw yourself. Learn some self-love in the process. We see this face EVERY DAY OF OUR LIVES. Learn to get to know it a little better.

Since eyes are THE point that draws attention to the viewer, putting alot of extra work both on the eyes and surrounding areas is important. A good pair of eyes can lift the whole drawing/painting to new levels, and a bad pair eyes can draw a drawing down. The eyes also defines alot of character and emotion. I sometimes start out with drawing the eyes to full detail and then work my way from there.

(wow, I wrote something serious! ;)

Lo - One good thing about SP, you can make yourself whatever you want. LOL

Here is mine for today. Remember, I am at work with just the supplies I have. This is truly mixed media. Paper - field book paper, mechanical pencil, permenant marker, map colors and highlighters *** whew that is why I am light headed right now ***. The picture is one on my computer from last year when it was snowing outside and I had long hair. Yes it was that long, don't laugh.

I am off for three days to celebrate Christ. I will have several SPs when I get back. Y'all have a great Easter and do not eat the little round chocolates left by the bunny!

thanks for rave review and inspiration - I actually like the idea of getting to work and enforcing some strict rules - cool idea all in all and wether I will do one portrait (building up) or several: it will certainly be fun.

Lotekk - wonderful depth in that last portrait

I thought this was the coolest idea ever, but after doing this piece, I'm not too sure how long I can keep this up... x_x

Anyway, tried working from mirror than from photo for the first time EVER. It takes a lot longer and is a whole lot easier to mess up, but I think the end result is worth it: first self-portrait that I can honestly say resembles me. Hopefully. I might change my mind in the morning.

Anyway, somewhere between one and a half and two and a half hours...

http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/self1.jpg

And because I'm vaguely suspecting that the glasses (which were a pain) killed it, here (http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/self1_ng.jpg) is a version without them.

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Here's the weekend's worth.

About an hour. I started and restarted this one aso it ended up messy. I was on holiday after all!
http://www.artfuloddities.com/2D/Sketches/SP/SP0006.jpg

These two were much quicker as I was basically using a hand mirror and talking to family over dinner. The cartoon one was probably about 1 minute long, but dammit it's what I look like!:

I'm seeing some damn fine work in this so far! Really, I must emphasise you people keep this up, i'm seeing some brilliant work in here.

Harry, the artrage stuff is wonderful.

Helen, you MUST keep going, your work is astounding, and quite frankly the glasses one looks better than the one without!

paperclip, keep it moving girl, you rock every day.

99sproth, don't be so hard on yourself, it looks awesome.

aggie, don't stop now!

Remember people, you're going to be MUCH MUCH harder on yourself with these because you're challenging your perception of what you look like as opposed to how you actually look. Self portraits are difficult because you're your own worst critic tenfold, as the artist AND the viewer.

Hehe, erilaz, I love the 4/16 one. XD Very nice job on all of them, though, and I can't wait to see the most recent one refined (please? :3). I'll certainly try to continue doing self-portraits, but... no promises.
aggie93, great job! I, too, love the mirror-in-a-mirror concept... :D Keep it up!
Llynna: I adore the way the swing one is progressing. Beautiful! As for time... I didn't really time it properly since I kept taking breaks and being distracted, but 2.5 hours is a decent estimate for actual painting time, I think. In other words, way too long. :/

http://www.freakachu.org/hitomi/images/self2.jpg
I decided to pretend I can use charcoal. :D Painter IX, uhhh... not a lot of minutes. ;)

Ok now I can reply to yall.

Helen - Your first one was great, I was going to tell you since you were worried not to be so detailed, I'm not! LOL Then you made you last one and said you didn't spend much time. It still looks great.

To everyone who commented about my mirror SP... that took care of two. lol And no I am not that mad, just serious about art...

Lo - you are going random very funny.

Eri - I like the comic drawing. It was kinda like, "what the hell"! Sometime how I feel.

Lynna - ahh, what happend to the nude theme? Still some sensuous works.

To those I left out, sorry! I'll try later. I may not get many more in this week for my board exam on Friday. Then I'll pump out some.

LoTekK

Comradebitter: Nice stuff! Both the charcoal and the painted pieces look great.

Aggie93: Alright! Keep that up, those are some cool SPs, and I'll echo the sentiment about the mirror portrait: very cool.

Llynna: Love the swing piece, and the two by the side are very cool, and quite different.

Martin: Yeah boooyyyy! I'm liking the first one with your hand covering half your face. Cool concept, nice execution. Lighting on the latest one looks great.

Okay, here's mine from last night. Artrage2 again, about an hour, I think. Tried using more saturated colors this time, but it's still looking kinna funky. But at least it doesn't look like I'm in drag! :D

Hey, some nice work going on here! :)

Helen, really liking the brushstrokes, it has a nice feel. :)

Teck, hey, that is looking much better. If you're feeling adventurous, you might try taking a copy of this piece into Painter and using the "Just Add Water" Blender ~ it's basically a kinder, gentler smudge tool. :)

Yeah, I agree with Rebecca. Awesome job! :D Especially on the eye; probably a bit too realistic for my comfort.
And whatever happened to that nude self-portrait? :P

Aggie, thanks for the advice. :) It was actually kind of fun trying to get all the details right on the first one - certainly something I should do more often (when time permits), as it's quite rewarding. :D But, you're right, simply sitting down for a few minutes and churning out some quick sketches is definitely good, especially when we all have 60 of these portraits to do...

LoTekK, thank you! Wonderful job on the latest piece; very painterly, and I love the lighting. :) Also, if you're going to go with blending, try the Pointed Stump and Soft Stump: they're great blenders, but leave more of the texture of the painting intact.

Rebecca: Thank you! :D Wish I had some newsprint and patience to work with some real charcoal, but you're going to have to settle for cheap digital imitations (which don't get my hands dirty). :)

Simon

Thanks Becca! You gotta do some more, your stuffs great!

This whole group pressure thing is just what I need to start developing some skills beyond just cloning what I see.

Hey guys, no post today. I will have to make up for the next few days next week. I am preparing for my test in a few days.

Helen - You hate water color pencils.... It appears you have mastered them! Maybe they hate you for that. Looks great. I like how you got the hair down, red hair at that.

Eri - Different angles are more difficult. Suggestion? Try to draw the skeleton first to see how the skin would wrap around it. It has always helped me on those hard angles.

99 - Just to get you an insite to my next one, when I get a chance, I am going to mix and match. Chalk on sidewalks, my son's crayons, angles, insides, animals, sexes, etc. Why not? It seems like we are going to have a bunch and you can only stand so many of the same pose and medium.

Hey WonderWoman, what's up with the blue hair? :D Kidding Teck, I think your SP's are getting a bit more solid. :) I would say to try to vary the size of the brush strokes you're using ~ colors are much clearer. Did you ever try the "Just Add Water" blender? Works like a dream. :)

Heya,

I was using a mirror for some of them and camera for others. My cameras on the blink though so they may all be mirror soon. I'm still really bad at drawing witout distorting myself. Its weird, I seem to draw myself how I see myself. Eg I hate my nose .. its kinda shows in the pictures.

Everyone has been real busy the last few days since I have been gone. I didn't get a chance to make up for that either this weekend. Family stuff. Here is the one I did last night. Charcoal and a different angle for me, took about 30 minutes. I think, since my exam is over, I will experiment a little with different additives. Like Lo & 99.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d50/Aggie93/060423SelfPortrait.jpg

This was with a freshly shaven head. It is great not having to do hair on your self portraits. LOL!

Simon

lol my nose is horrible! ok well just my face.. eeeesh.

Thanks! When I started 3d I would always do mechanical stuff, but I started doing portraits in z-brush a while ago. Its like sculpting! I love it!

Edit: Cool Sp Davey, the eyes look a little forced, but its better than what I could do in 30 minutes!

Gorg, you make it sound like I swear a lot; what's up with that? :D

Nice work, everyone! :)

Mine. My eyes were killing me after a while, since the laptop was the only source of light in the room (I really need to get a swivel lamp for these alternate-lighting pieces). The lighting was a lot tougher to pull off than I imagined.

http://www.lotekk.com/files/sp15.jpg

edit: Did a bit of fixup in PS; shifted the eyes and nose down, repainted the affected bits.
Argh. The shadowed area's too light. Looks like I'm missing half my head, rather than it being in shadow.
Gorg! You killed Tom Cruise and replaced him with Elvis! :D

I'm still one behind, but I'll catch up either tomorrow or Friday night, depending on when I get my damned math assignment done. :argh: This one is me trying a somewhat different workflow in Artrage (multiple transparent layers, kinna like glazing). Simo,

Oh no, not me at 18! :scream: All I can say is...I see dead people...

gorg,

You channeling Elvis buddy? :D I think what might help your piece would be to outline a bit less heavily ~ rely instead on contrast of light and shade to create form, much as you did with your OFDW (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3181543&postcount=320) piece. /me cries a little at the proud memory. :) I think particularly the outlining of your right eye and the outlining of the lips is flattening things out. Some relatively minor touches would really give Swedish Elvis the spark of life. :)

Cheers,

~Rk

Reb: Nah, that just my hair when I wake up and dont use a hairbrush :P
Yepp, I should be more careful with the form. This piece I just did a quick sketch of myself and then applied the shadows from imagination, really hard to get good light going on in my house

I'll pay close attention on the next SP.

Rebeccak
04-27-2006, 08:23 AM
Gorg,

If you have a small lamp, you might try getting some spooky effects with that. :) I agree it's really hard to do shadows from imagination, the better reference you have, the better off you'll be. :)

...Modeling, to me, isn't just about being good-looking or having a lot of fun and being really, really good looking. The Sp overdrive was great because it gave people a chance to see a side of my versatility. The original Greek word for model means "misshapen ball of clay" and I try to think about that every time I get in front of a camera...

Simon - please give her a headband! And a guitar... and a tacky song to sing...:D

Rebecca - I am confused. Too many options to handle. First thing I did was I created my own category (called "Laboratory") which contains a simple round hard edged brush, the same as an eraser and a round soft edged brush.
At the moment I am staying in this "safe part of the town", sort of like my own "Variant suburb", interrupted by short and frantic outbreaks to "downtown" trying every brush that comes my way and returning late at night with a headache to my little laboratory.

The next morning I don't remember anything....:scream:
