Radeon = good hardware, horrible drivers.
Try sticking a different card in it just to make sure its the card..sounds like you built the system yourself (many little things can cause idiosyncrasies). If you isolate it, bitch to ATi about it. Or, a better solution, sell it and get one thats qualified on the A|W site.

i use the radeon 8500 video card, and i have the troubles that you say. i found two solutions, but lossing some graphics acceleration. :(
1.- Download the UniTurner, a utility with a loot of "hidden" registry entries for the radeon 8500 video cards. With this utility, you can force to use the Microsoft Software OpenGL. All aceleration with this option enabled is from software, not from your video card. in maya works fine, but depends what machine you have.
2.- Install the last FireGL Drivers with your Radeon video card. It works, and with more hardware acceleration than the microsoft software solution, but you must restart windows each time you install the new drivers. With the UniTurner, you only must restart maya.
I use only the first solution, and only for texture placement and "some" playbasts. The rest, i use the last radeon drivers (6530). Not perfect, but it works for me.
you can visit www.rage3d.com for more info about download this utilities.

Or better yet just get a new graphics card based on AW qualified list. There's a reason why certain cards isn't certified. I'd recommend if you're on a budget a Elsa Synergy III (Quadro 2 MXR). It works really well.
