Hello, does anyone here watch Mobile Suit Gundam 0079?

This is my picture of the girls from that show; a 3D and 2D composite.
The background and Haro the robot were rendered in 3DS Max 4.2, using Finalrender Illustrator along with simple fall off map to get a more toon look.

The characters are Sayla, Matilda, and Mirai from the original Gundam series; I did them in western comic style as opposed to anime. The conversion was not without difficulty, you be the judge of that.

Since I am new to the whole series in general, I am interested in any feedback, especially from people who watch the show and probably know more about it than I.

It looks great! Actually one of the best I have seen!

Before spending a small fortune on FinalRender I would love to know your procedure for the "toon" look.

j :)

BTW - your site is pretty amazing!

I love Gundam! This is a great interpretation of the characters. Sayla and Haro are my favorite characters from the original series. YAY!:bounce: HARO! HARO!

Looking great. One thing I'd like to mention though... the shadows cast by the hat and the hair make those specific items look a bit stuck on. :)

...just the ear of the central character... it's a bit strange. However it remains a great work!

there was a comic a while back called "red star" Really cool 2d-3d hybrid stuff. I would say this is easily up to par with that, if not better. And thats saying something.

Lets see some more!

wow thanks for the feedback. Glad you like the picture.

jarch- It is a fairly simple process. I attached the following screencaps- these are from the FR material in Max mat editor.
http://www.phoenix-archetypes.com/2dgallery2/falloff-01a.jpghttp://www.phoenix-archetypes.com/2dgallery2/falloff-02.jpg

The first one shows my fall off map - Poor man's toon shader... since I don't have FinalToon or any of those fancy shaders.

Second one shows the FR illustrator parameters- simple as enabling toon lines. I took the added step of fading out the lines in photoshop as they went down the hall since they got too cluttered at the end.

Sir_jet- Mostly photoshop and Max. And my pencil/pens too.
The jazz on my site is mostly Dave Brubeck, finest jazz musician/composer who is still alive.

HapZungLam- Amuro doesn't quite fit into the scene... girls and all :buttrock: I also omitted Frau Bow because she is annoying. Is she even a member of the crew? Or some sort of glorified babysitter?

madtank- Grain was mostly a layer of dirt and noise composited in photoshop. I think it was galvanized steel bits set to Multiply and then applied at 20% opacity.

Hope that answers your questions. If you have any more let me know.

i like a lot that image, but something is catching my eye on the face of the center and left ones. I think it is something about their facial expressions. I think they have very similar ones, and it contrast a lot with the girl in the right. Maybe you could do some tests about that and maybe you could give the image a bit more of personality.

I hope i have explained myself, sorry, english is not my native languaje :)

lildragon - Whoa Thanks! both for the Award and the helpful feedback earlier. I'll post this on my site for sure; best regards

For those interested: not quite a tutorial but at the following link is a photoshop PSD file.

It depicts the 14 layers used in the 2D parts. Perhaps someone will find this helpful in the coloring?

http://www.phoenix-archetypes.com/2dgallery2/ttut.jpg

It's a bit small but PSD files are too big to host fill size. This was from before color balancing so it may appear a bit different.

And lastly, here's the reference pics from the original show. You can see the big difference in style.

and their boobs are smaller too.

Concerning your original post (the 3 girls in the blue corridor): Excellent work, very professional. My only comment is that the lighting in the background does not match that of the characters; looks like two completely different light sources. Still, the scene works and the draftsmanship is way good. Feed us more!:buttrock:

Damn, Dak....that looks awsome!!!

And that PSD really helped out...I'll try something like that, if you don't mind heh. I bet I can do the outline in MAX...so I won't have to draw it :D
