View Full Version : How to apple a different image to the back of a image in 3d view
Phantom__2 04-10-2006, 08:44 PM Ok so the title didn't make much sense. I am trying to make a card house and want each image to have two sides like a front and back of a real card. If I bring in a pic of a card and go into 3d mode the pic is the same on both sides. How can I apply an image to one side and a different image to the other? Thanks for any help or tips.

You can use Card Wipe or Card Dance for this.
Faking would be possible too, blending out the frobtside when it's nearly invisible due the rotation and blend in the backside. If you time it right, it will look like what you are after.

Just duplicate the card layer. then move it behind the front layer a wee bit. Apply the back texture to it. Then parent it to the front layer.

Nah, much too easy.
Time for sleep I guess.

I think the duping the layer and move it a bit might work. I am planing on making a city our of playing cards. So I just might skip two sided cards and do it quicker which is still going to take a long time modeling a city in this program.

dude use a 3d application for a task like this. A city of 3d cards is going to be soooo much easier in 3d. sure it can be done but it is far from ideal !

I soooo agree this program is not meant for 3D modeling but it is a project assigned in my After effects class. I would so much rather model it in Maya but can't. We are going to do camera drive through and mess with lights. Strange project for sure.

You could, once you have the two sided card created, pre-compose it. then you duplicate the pre-comp the number of cards you need. that way you'll have half the number of layers in your timeline.

Building a 3D city in AE? Do you have an idea what are you talking about? I'm doing a few camera flight through some sketches of buildings( ground and 4 walls) and I know that I never ever will do this in After Effects again. As much as I like it for 2d animation, as much it sucks when it comes to 3d.

Yes it is a pretty big pain in the butt. 3D needs some help in this program. But my teacher is also under the delusion that cinema 4D is a kick ass 3d program. We clash on that one all the time. Cinema 4d compare to maya is like comparing After effects to GIF animator. But I am going to rock the shizba with the assignment. I have some major issues precomping anything. I select the layer in this case the two. Front and back of the card spaced apart by .5 and precomp it and then they are squished to just the one. Maybe I will post the tif files and see if anyone can do it and then tell me how. I don't have the tifs on my though.

Here are the tif files. If you can precomp this let me know. When I pre comp it it combines them and am left with both sides being the same. Thanks for any help and tips.

After you pre-compose them just click on the continuous rasterize icon on the pre-comp layer. The little sun like icon. between the shy and qaulity icons.
I would go even farther. Go back to the original comp Before you pre-comped it. Duplicate the two layers that make up the card 5 times. you'll end up with 10 layers. Rename the layers, i went with 1 and 1b and 2 and 2b and so on for the pairs. make sure to parent the back to the front for each pair. then grab the fronts and move them so that you make a four sided cube with a roof. then make a new null layer position it so that it's in the middle of the house then parent all the fronts of the cards to it. Then pre compose. turn on the continuous raterize .make it 3d layer then duplicate the pre comp all you need. then make a camera and yer off!!

that sounds awesome. Haven't tried this an not in the lab that’s why I ask instead of try but can you pre comp the cube with animation. So if the cards built themselves into a cube then pre comp that and build multip animations from the one comp duped. I think this should work just asking if anyone knows or has a tip I would miss when doing this. Thanks a ton Shayder you totally fixed me up.

Make sure you use the continuously raterize option for your 3d layers and that you ahave the ORIGINAL card layer's shadows set to ON. Palyed with this for about 10 minutes and did this :

So awesome. And you saved my life with the cast shadow option. Why in petes sake is that defaulted to off. You guys rock. I will post my final render as a visual thank you to all your help. May take a week though. :)

You can't precompose 3d layers and have the precomp retain the 3d data. rotating a precomp of back-to-back 3d elements will NOT reveal both sides of the card, even if 3d is enabled in the precomp. You will need to keep all layer pairs in one comp if you plan to arrange them, move through them etc.and retain both sides of the card. Or am I missing something here?
