View Full Version : 3d artist in need for direction
Blot12345 12-29-2002, 09:40 PM Hello, I am a novice 3d artist, i use 3D studio max. I have been dabbling with it for over a year. I understand all the basic concepts and am able to use them all. However when ever I try to apply this to making a good model i find it difficult to keep with it, I most often quit after a little bit of modelling. I've tried tutorials and whenever i find one that would be cool, it is either to easy, way to hard, or to complex. Anyways if anyone who has been in this position could give me any advice i would be most thankful. I really want to continue learning, however i need something to aim for. Thank You.

Sounds like you're doing good to me.... :D
All the ones who learned it by themselves walked that path, the difference is, they didn't gave up!
If u want some good toturials on modeling, I know a very good one. It's very popular so it might be u already know of it.
Try to search for the jean of arc tutorial with google

Hmmmm, I dunno what could be the problem, but it's proboblly lack of strong will. I for example started with 3d about 3 years from now. Haven't used hardlly any tutorials, just turned a few pages in my 3d books, but still the large part of the learning process goes like "uuuuuuuuuu what does this button do!!!?? "except for the part where the lab blows into pieces :p . You have to explore on your own, coz that's the only way you can really learn something. With taking on projects that you feel are to difficult you'll improve your skills, you need some good motivation, and son't learn how to use the app's options, that what's really important is to lear how to use the program to achive the effect you desire, learning pure options without creating something won't get you far. You have to think about it, and if you decide you want to overcome your weakness you'll make the first step on a long journey, but remember it's long way to the top. GReetz

Hi,
I am pretty much a newbie also, and thus far it's been peaks and valleys. Sometimes I feel like I am making decent progress while other times I feel totally down on myself. Just keep grinding away. But if the passion is not there then it might difficult to keep at it. Oh yeah and if you need insperation just check here at cgTalk, if the work here doesn't get you pumped for cg nothing will. Good Luck!

skier, that was really uncalled for, I went through the same phase, and still do...
3d requires a great deal in understanding and skill in 2D art, I made the mistake of wanting to be a 3d animator...with no sculpting, painting and poor drawing skills. Learning requieres a great deal of patience and studing.
I picked up some books at the library and worked on most of my artistic skills (now they are really great). Just keep working at traditional art skills and when you get a sketch down of a really great character or scene...take that up the next level and turn it into 3D.

skier1185, you are a troll. I think CG Talk would be better off without you.

Blot12345,
just dont give up is my advice... quit using learning material and start experimenting, go through the forums and look at all the wireframes people have posted. Just looking at wireframes helped me ALOT when I started to model myself, it all sortof sank in with out me knowing it :D
