View Full Version : Saving R8 files back to 7.3
Bucko 12-29-2002, 07:20 PM There doesn't seem to be a way to save R8 files so they can be opened in 7.3. Really irritating as my R8 always crashes when I render with instances and I cannot work properly without instances :annoyed:.
Most application give the user some backwards compatability (dropping all new features of course) but alas not R8!
Do I have to switch to Maya Unlimited? They have backwards compatability between 4.0 and 4.5 we have an unused floating license at work...

I can only suggest that you export your file to one of the other formats, and then import it with R7.

I think your energy would be better spent contacting Maxon and trying to get your problem resolved instead of wishing Maxon would waste time and resources making their software backwards compatible, which only slows things down and prevents new features from being introduced.

If you have Maya Unlimited better to work with that.Maya is the Best 3D software and they won an Oscar(scientific) this year.....
You can not compare Maya to any other 3D software even Softimage.
If it is avalable to you use it!

I disagree with this comment, I have access to maya, but prefere to use cinema, as i feel cinema has a much better workflow, and more basic, and even some more advanced tasks are performed quicker on c4d.

My 8 works fine its my graphics card which is the problem...but I export from 8 if I have to in wavefront/OBJ format to 7.3 :) Anything in a hyper nurbs though comes out sub divided at the other end as opposed to still in a hyper nurbs.

What about some third party format converter?

A problem has been identified with instances and old plugins. In specific, Paul Everett's Solid Spline (free) plugin is known to cause this exact behavior, although others may also have problems.
You can test this by renaming your plugins folder so R8 cannot find it when it loads.

? SoftImage XSI is definitely the killerapp no.1 on the market. I had the chance to work with MAYA and SoftImage. SoftImage beats MAYA in a lot of things (of course MAYA has some really killer tools too, no doubt). But workflow, tools etc. work a bit smoother for me.
At the end, if you are really working professionally with 3D, you will have to use different packages to get a professional result. And a lot of things are just done faster with Cinema 4D for itīs ease of use in so many parts of the application.
And anyway the only conclusion to this question can always just be: Different artist, different package.
This is not negociable I guess.
Just my 2 cent.

Dear Samir (Designer) I am totaly agree with you Different artist, different package. I am doing 70% of my projects with C4D but about the other 30% notting can make it unless Maya I mean fluid effects and Paint effects are totaly sweet and very very very powerful.
and about softimage XSI ......you got what you pay for it .......6500$ and 500 more than Maya Unlimited it must be better !!!!
I love XSI it is a killer app...character animation fur and hair cloth and most of all animation mixer is much much better than maya's tools specially Animation mixer but....when it becomes to Dynamics Maya is the final cut.....

yep, I totally agree with your statement now. PaintFX & fluidFX are great and animation, fur, hair and cloth really rock in SoftImage (though the hair part could be improved). As you already say, especially the SoftImage animation part is just the best I have seen in an app so far.
But letīs say one thing: We love Cinema 4D thatīs why we are here.

i thought srek had posted that maxon were working on a fix for crashes like instances or something....dunno just a thought...should therefore be fixed shortly....but then the solidsplines crash i had not heard about until today....so maybe this is more up2date....dunno either way would still like to see better backwards compatibility....but then very often with such major changes to the software as it has currently had it is very often not viable...and users have to realistically bit the bullet..

I, as the originator of this "drifted off topic into religious waters" topic, feel obliged to inform that the crashing instances in my case cleared up nicely after reinstalling the software (duh).
Cinema R8 works swell for me (I still would have liked some backwards path to v7 files aside from exporting/importing away all the goodies).
As I only use 3D software as a hobbyist I neither have the time nor inclination to learn Maya esp with its irky userinterface and bad renderer.
My day job is programming games so I merely fire up Maya now and then to check if my exporter plug works (which I had to make in two flavors, one for Maya 4.0 and one for 4.5 - so much for plugin compatability).
