View Full Version : Character: Roman Head
Jason-Kane 12-29-2002, 11:04 AM Hi! :scream:
I am creating this character for an upcoming animation.
This guy will be a Roman centurian. I spent 2.5 days on this head.
This work is personal and just for fun. :D
I will post all my progress on this thread as I go along.
The head here is nearly complete minus the ears, neck, and hair. OH! And the lack of eyeballs! :surprised
I hope you enjoy the work. The rendering/lighting right now is just quick and dirty:)

nice work!
what software and modeling technique have you used?
And to be a little critical:
Is that border on the side of the head supposed to be there?
It doesn't look natural.
I look forward to seeing the end result with texture and proper lightning...

Thanks!!
I use Maya 4.0 and I just use good old fashion polygonal box modeling.
The border on the side of the head was just a temporary indicator of where the hairline might be. It was just for my own reference while I was working. He will eventually have a steel helmet on which will cover all of that anyway.
Thanks Again,
Jason Kane

Have you used references?

Nice model Kane...............but if he is a centurian you are bettre to put him a little younger he looks like for me 50 years old..........but if you made him like Cesar he looks perfect for me........keep it up

Thanks,
That is funny... Mel Brooks :applause:
I did not use one reference I used about 8 different faces and even made some of it up.
I agree with the younger thing. At this point I have to move on and put the armor on him, but if he still looks way too old then I will make him look younger. :)

I forgot to mention that most of my reference was from actual sculpture made during the time of the roman empire. I thought this would set the right mood.

Indeed, the model really seems an imperial sculpture so you got it
I'm Italian, I often see roman sculptures, I know well their look! :D

I really admire classic Roman sculpture. While modeling this I was really amazed at their knowledge of anatomy and the attention to detail. It makes me wonder if Renaissance artists ever really captured the full glory of Roman sculpture.

Very nice looking head.
Could we also see a wireframe <I'd love to see the flow lines> and get a poly count?

hmmm, nice character, but seems more jewish than roman. The nose is too low in the front.

possibly fatting out his lower face ?? Thats the only thing i noticed is that he seems a bit to slim at his lower jaw.

Here is the next installment. I have detailed the ears and obviously added this helmet. The helmet is not complete due to the fact that it is missing a rear plate. That and more will be in the next update. Please enjoy! :D

The story I plan to animate with this character calls for an unrewarded, weathered Roman soldier in his late 30's. He is meant to look somewhat evil and somewhat sinister. I think that will come more from the morph targets. As of now he has a blank expression.
I will post the mesh with the next update.

This looks really promising! You captured the roman spirit perfectly.
Keep going

Hey Jason, great work as usual. I have to disagree with the comment about making him look younger. I believe if you live a hard life then it ages you considerably. Also, if I remember correctly from my art history classes;) That the romans believed that every line and bulge in your face had meaning and a past. I think you've nailed the look of a veteran roman soldier.

I totaly love how it's looking :) It has a very sculptural look to it, not sure if this was meant or not, but I like it.
If you want it to look a little more realistic, try to smooth out some of the curves especially around the nose, even though you are doing the whole roman stereo type, his face is a little jagged.
:) Good work.:bounce:
Very cool.....

I work professionally as a character modeler at a video game studio. Our character models are relatively high poly but it is still very annoying to have to work with in game poly counts. This cinematic project was a personal project that allowed me to be liberated from those low counts. I am still able to easily move this mesh around with wire deformers in Maya and my render time was only 30 seconds a frame at the smoothed count of 48,000 polys. I am not suffering from any hits in performance at all. I am also very skilled at managing huge scenes and will use layers and referenced objects to manage the scene. I also may end up doing some compositing for this.
BTW... My friend works at a studio as a character modeler also and he is honestly told to model his characters to be 100,000 polys. He models lip texture, wrinkles, veins, pimples and even some pores. :D :D

I love it, so much character in that face! He looks like he's worked his way up the legionary rankings to become a commander of sorts. He is of the perfect age as well.
While I eagerly await the finished product, would you mind sharing one unsmoothed wireframe? That would be delightful.
[edit] Just explored your little corner of the web and saw your light demonstration. It was fantastic! Any lighting tips to share? Favorite setups? Workflows?

This mesh looks really heavy, but I promise that I will be able to actually move this beast around and actually animate it.

X Intern Mike,
Yeah, I was wondering if you would be on here. Thanks for the encouragement. I typically don't post anything on here, but I just thought I could use some crit as I went along on this project. Plus this is my own stuff so I can actually legally post it.
You can find my email on my website.

Another modeler I know found his model on someone esles demo reel. He never released the 3D file, but he did post registered front and side views of the smoothed wireframe. I have also read articles about software that samples a model from images of wireframes and personally understand the math behind this.
For this reason I have taken the wireframe offline.
Sorry.

This is still a WIP. :) I have made a list of things I intend on completing at the bottom of this post.
:)
-Articulate the anatomy on the hands and arms. At present they are merely a block in.
-Model veins, tendons, and skin wrinkles into the legs and feet. Also define Toes.
-Model detail into fabric on sleeves and the back of skirt. Also, tear rips in skirt and make it flow dynamically with the pull of the gladius holster.
-Model a gladius sword and diagonal shoulder strap leather holster.
-Model belt with dagger and canteen attached.
-Model Sandals.
-Beat up armor by adding dents and scratches.
-Model Spear and Shield.
-Model Gauntlets or Bracers.
-Add scraps of undergarment fur tunic protruding from under skirt.
-Connect neck and model wrinkled tunic protruding from armor by neck area.
-Most Obvious... Add eyes.
-Ultimately, beat up dent and scar everything. Add some more random asymmetry
