Compositing is putting multiple sources together in one shot. An example is greenscreening. Think of visual effects and 3d integration. Editing is putting different shots together in an order to convery a message/story/etc...
please forgive me...I dont think I understad what you have just written...you say compositing is putting multiple sources together and editing is putting different shots together...
when you say putting multiple sources together in compositing...what kind of multiple sources....and in eiditing when you say putting different shots together...what different shots...
from your explanation, I have not been able to deduce anything from it...can you please try harder...and besides whats greenscreening...
thank you very much...

Watch this video I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmhnEjdmtMs
The person is not actually on a stage. When I taped it he was standing in front of a green colored wall. Using a compositor I took away the green background. I got pictures of the stage and put them under the layer with the person. This is compositing. This was done in several compositions (sequences) in the After Effects (a compositor). I then edited the compositions together in Premiere (an editor). I didn't change what the footage looked like. I just cut between the compositions to change shots.
now i see what compositing and editing is all about...thanks alot...

ps: it was a pity i could not view your video because my bandwidth at the moment isnt good enough to stream videos on the internet...
to my understanding of what you explained to me...compositing means placing the focal point/image over a background/composite images while editing is blending all composite layers and focal point/images to have a uniform look.... :argh: ..am i right..?
wow! if this is what you mean...then I now have a full understanding what it's all about...just had a look at the pink panther music video by beyonce knowles and it all become so clear to me...thesame thing we all saw in the last star wars movie......thanks a whole lot...
i think now i have a reason to go obtain a copy of fluid mask plu-in for the adobe photoshop programme....
thanks...

compositing is creating the way the shots look, about what happens IN the shot. Editing is taking those shots and placing them after each other and creating a movie.
...i think i am going nuts here...anyways...i think i already have an idea of what both mean..anyways if you can xplain further please go ahead...'kk'

let's make it simple for him ;)
compositing is finishing a piece of a puzzle
editing is finishing the puzzle/ laying down all the pieces at the correct place :)
...I think I have really lost now...
you guyz have really tried alot for me and I really appreciate the links you sent to me. It will take a while before I can have a full understanding of what these 'jargons' mean but with time I know I'll understand.
now I am begining to confuse myself with compositing, editing and matte painting...phew..!!
like the chinese saying says, a picture speaks better than words...which one of you knows of any website where I can see some images that will help me...?
thank you guyz...

Okay--
Compositing is layering images together in a shot. You might have a piece of video, a 3d CG element, and / or a green-screen actor to put together. It works basically like this: http://www.ethereal3d.com/Tutorials/Compositing/Compositing.html
Editing, on the other hand, puts entire scenes together. In Star Wars Ep. III, for example, the editors cut between scenes on Coruscant and scenes on Mustafar. They also chose camera angles, closeups or wide shots, etc. to set the mood and keep the story moving along.
Matte paintings are used in compositing to produce a background for an image or video.
. . . in other terms, compositors use After Effects; editors use Premiere; and matte painters use Photoshop. (not to slight users of other softwares. . .)
...thank you guyz for the messges but I guess it will take a long time to understad this...say some dayz of research...
thank you for the the links you have all posted....
