When you render an image sequence out of blender are you using a file format that supports z-depth? (ie rpf or rla)

naw just using a plugin to alter the image to show the greyscale depth. The only file formats that export from it with depth are iris and exr.. But I can't see the depth in either of those...

AFAIK exr only has 32bit (alpha) no z-depth.

You need to use a file format that utilizes z-depth specifically to use any of the 3d channel effects in AE.

You can import 3D channel image files saved in RLA, RPF, Softimage PIC/ZPIC, and Electric Image EI/EIZ formats.

FYI you can download a 30-day fully-functional trail of 3ds Max or Softimage XSI (not sure about Maya it may only be the PLE version) but just import and then render out to the format you need...
