Title: The Devil's Spine
Name: Luca Bonatti
Country: Italy
Software: Photoshop

The inspiration for thismatte painting comes from David Friedrich paintings. I tried to resemble the same gothic moods of his art and, at the same time, to play a little bit with the camera angle and the perspective.
I started from a concept sketch and then refined t to achieve a realistic feel, even integrating photos.

One special thank to the guys of the new MattePainting's section of these boards!

Original resolution: 4000x2000
Time to complete: 2 weeks

Hi!
Really amazing...
A lot of matte painting doesn't satisfy me (too much elements, not really mixed, or with errors of lighting)
But not this one!!
Bye

Bravo Luca. Complimenti! It's really fantastic! Moody, simple, great perspective direction, good composition, looks like a fly-over, it has a sense of movement. You should put it on your site or portfolio - it would be great to see it in a higher res. Keep up the great work! In bocca al lupo. Like the title.

Hi Elessar,

Very very beautiful, dark and mysterious work!!! I like the composition (crooked horizon), it really adds something in atmosphere and dynamic...
The technical part doesnt seem very difficult, but from an artistic point of view it is amazing and feels really spot on! 4 Stars from me! The light/dark effects are very cool done too!

I think I will write down a tutorial or a step by step gallery of this piece, but if you want to give a look to the "behind the scenes" you can click here . (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=339571)
For the higher resolution picture you've gotta wait a little bit. :)

Thank you again (grazie anche ai compatrioti :) )!

The following picture illustrates the stages I've passed through to get the final picture, starting from the sketch. The right pictures are the photos I've (heavily) manipulated to achieve photorealism.

Nicely done Elessar! The transition from your sketch shows good decisions in what you've changed. There are so many elements to watch for in matte work, and you've handled this really well.

Kudos!

Thank you! To read those words from you is a very, very big encouragement! :)

If you want to give a look to the hi-res version, I've uploaded it (it's not the full res, but I think it's enough).

There you go.

Looks good!
I like the Dutch angle of the composition - but my buddy Tim Warnock noted that your horizon seems out of whack. It looks like you've got two (one in the background, one on the foreground) that converge to the left. Take a look and see what you think...

Cheers

Yeah, I know what you mean. But painting I followed strictly the perspective lines I drawed at the beginning. The only problem is that the fog is much more thick on the left so the horizon line is hidden, while at the left is visible under the clouds.
Maybe if I will put the hands again on this piece I will shed more light in the right corner to make the horizon visible.

PS Greetings and compliments to your friend too ;)
