View Full Version : Cinematic Game Trailer: World In Conflict
AndersEgleus 04-07-2006, 10:05 AM During ten hectic weeks last fall, the cinematics team at Massive Entertainment, a game developer in Malmö, Sweden, produced this trailer for the announcement of the upcoming game World In Conflict. Now that the game has been announced, we can finally show it to the world. So without further ado, here it is:
http://www.worldinconflict.com/us/trailer.html
And here a couple of stills from the trailer:
http://www.massive.se/stills/WicTrailerStill_S03.jpg
http://www.massive.se/stills/WicTrailerStill_S04.jpg
There were 6 people dedicated to the production when the trailer was produced (1 director/compositor, 2 2d/3d artists, 1 animator, 1 effects artist and a sound designer). We recorded the motion capture at an external studio. The main programs used were Lightwave, Modo, Photoshop, Z-brush, Maya and After Effects.
Hope you enjoy the trailer.

Hey, thanks for all the kind feedback!
Is this all keyframed?I guess you're referring to the character animation: no, that was motion captured, but there's a lot of keyframing involved when tweaking and cleaning the motion capture data.

well it feels good its just that some piece of the clip is like off. the timing feels wrong sometimes in the editing. well thats what i think otherwise its nice love the last shot when the russians run out of the plane
why did you change the logo in the end? i saw an early version of the video some time ago..

Always nice to hear some constructive criticism, thanks emptyslot. Maybe you'd care to elaborate, give an example perhaps? We're all really greatful for any honest feedback, it will help us improve.
About the logo - yeah, it went through a few iteratitions before marketing decided on a final version.

WOW! This is one awesome looking trailer. Hope the game is as good. That set-up in the first sequence is one of the best i've seen. I just love that 'reveal' of the mall battlefield.

you're doing some really impressive work guys!! (and girl.. :D)
one of the coolest trailers I've seen in a long time..! :)
Wow thats really incredible. U sure have great art direction! Thanks for posting :)
Wow THAT IS a really cool trailer! Rough and original image, maybe also thanks to post treatment that very tough, perfect for this kind of subject, and very great for the feel. Ok don't laugh, but it kind of reminded me... videodrome! :D
Also 3d is very impressive plus very fluide.
Great feel of confusion, action (urban, jungle, even on the beach!), well, congrats to the team, superb work.
OK
For what listed it's 5 stars from me, even if i just don't really like war video games.

Nice job with the atmosphere and overall feeling. Really liked the camera work. Great smoke effects, people want making-of ;)
Exellent work AndersEgleusn
The pacing is pretty beautiful, and light and staging of shots is exellent. The tank scene with the chopper crashing is my favorite, and the pull up to see the amusement rides from the beach is a great shot. Once again, brilliant work.

Its game like this that keep me up till 5am, when i have to be at work at 9am.
Awesome trailer can't wait to get my hands on it.
I was on one of the first showings... maybe the absolute first? (you said something like that anyway. Cant remember if it was you that showed it to us though :S )
I like the video alot. Especielly the beginning and the part in the end with the russians. It almost looks like one of them jumps into the plane. Its an angle-thing i guess. :)
Anyway, I hope Massive gets more recognition with this game than the last ones. Who knows, Maybe you will take over the throne from DICE? :p
See ya around next time you visit SOFE.

Well firstly I have to say this trailer is superbly made... very intense emotion involved. I must say the motion tracking is top class!
On the otherhand, I've one small crit about the last scene. I reckon the 'running' out of the plane for the drop is incredibly off-putting. The viewer gets the idea that the camera must represent a soldier, yet the motion, taking into account the motion of the soldiers in front, doesn't seem correct somehow - it's seems too smooth and high. However, if the camera is just a perspective then congratulations on an incredible trailer! :applause:

Awesome trailer! I liked how you used the same format as you see with movie trailers (web site design layout).
Also, is the city at the end New York? That was my intial guess, but I can't always recognize New York right off (being from Texas).

Very impressive trailer. Something seems off though with the soldier up against the tree in the opening scene in the jungle. It looks like his hand goes through his gun a couple times. Also in the mall scene, the dynamics on the stools and the box towards the end of the shot look a little floaty. But there's a lot of amazing stuff going on. In my opinion the beach scene stands out from the rest. Not just the look but the animation (mo-cap) seems to work better there than anywhere else. particularly when the soldier adjusts his face mask. good stuff.

I remember seeing this trailer the other day. There is something very different about it, I can't put a finger on it, but the motion capture and camera direction just pushes into very realistic territory, and the environments are wonderful. It feels much different than most CG cinematics, and I like it for that

Looks excellent in general - concept and shots are brilliant and very enthralling.
Forgive me if i'm repeating an already asked question, but what kind of rendering power did you use?
It seems to me that many of the shots, especially the tank shot, could benefit much from a 60% opacity, multiplied occlusion pass. And with such excellent compisiting elements, motions, lighting and everything actually, I found it difficult to understand why this wasn't done.
Another question, if I may; what software did you use for the smoke and explosions? I'm used to seeing Afterburn work behind these kind of effects, but you didn't mention Studio max being used so... What did you guys use? :)
Again, great job.

Cool, It's nice to see this thing is finally out in the wild. I was actually trying to look up information on a possible GC:3 and ran across this on some backwater page a week or two ago. What a coincidence, I guess I could just sense there was a new Massive RTS coming out.

It's most certainly a fantastic work, but is it just me or do cinematics for games sometimes ruin the excitement level when you see the real game in action? Personally, I cannot wait until the game itself looks like the quality of this trailer! We can dream....

Thanks for all the great feedback, we're a bit overwhelmed. Pretty amazing feeling to see the thread being plugged too.
Thanks especially for the constructive criticism that some of you have contributed, that's really invaluable.
I'll try to answer the questions as best I can.
xtrm3d:how did you do the pyrotechnique effekt ?
lw or something else ?
hypervoxel is great .. but can be a really beast sometime .. :-(Some of the pyrotechnics was done in Maya using fluids and particles, but a lot of it was keyed out footage of filmed smoke, fire and explosions, put together in post by Tobbe, our talented compositor (and lead/director).
Oink:I was on one of the first showings... maybe the absolute first? (you said something like that anyway. Cant remember if it was you that showed it to us though :S )No, that would have been Tobbe.
trthing:So let me get this straight: basically 3 3D people made this in ten weeks of work?Well, with such a small team the roles tend to blend into eachother - we all chipped in a bit here and there. So i'd still say 5 3d people and a sound designer.
Kapow:So when's the movie coming out?LOL! Well you can always play the game in 2007...
Krugar:send my props to whoever was responsible for the colour grading and palettesThat would once again be Tobbe. And yes, we'll greatfully accept your props. Always in need of good props to take some load off our modelers :)
Opeth:Forgive me if i'm repeating an already asked question, but what kind of rendering power did you use?
It seems to me that many of the shots, especially the tank shot, could benefit much from a 60% opacity, multiplied occlusion pass. And with such excellent compisiting elements, motions, lighting and everything actually, I found it difficult to understand why this wasn't done.
Another question, if I may; what software did you use for the smoke and explosions? I'm used to seeing Afterburn work behind these kind of effects, but you didn't mention Studio max being used so... What did you guys use?About rendering power, let's just say: too little. That, and a short timespan were the main reasons we couldn't blow all the bells and whistles we would have liked. But it's a very valid point, and something we're working on for future productions. About the smoke and explosions - see the answer for xtrm3d above.
I think the other questions have already been answered (a lot of people asking about production time, funny since it's in the original post :) ).
roblap: Thanks, I'm forwarding that to someone in charge.
One more thing: as you can see in the screenshots from the game (there are more over at gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/worldinconflict/screenindex.html), it's got some pretty amazing graphics and it won't have any problem holding the candle to the cinematics even though it's realtime. In fact when working on particle effects and stuff for the cinematics, I often get ideas and help from the in-game graphics programmers. And I think all of the cinematics team benefit a lot from working so close (same office) as a bunch of really talented in-game artists and programmers.
I really enjoyed the cinematic, the mocap on the characters totally added to the realism of the project. I think you guys did a fantastic job. Only thing I would say is that after the explosions in the mall, the chairs seem to slide quite unrealistically, and it also looked like the russians or (the bad guys) seemed to be attacking on xmas, ie xmas lights, on the houses, is that cos they are images on texture planes, or are those lights modeled?

Also, how were your render times using all of the Radiosity, or did you bake a lot of it?

04-12-2006, 05:31 AM
Excellent work. Whoever directed it did a great job. The way the camera pulls back to reveal each furious battle as actually being fought in places we don't usually associate with war--mundane shopping mall, suburb, amuzement park by the boardwalk..etc. Very compelling and creates a sense of dread--that war could come down on us just like rain. The final shot of the paratrooper diving out the transport aircraft---just stunningly epic.

As a an intern it has been really interesting to see how professionals work in the CG Buissness and how the magic actually comes to life, instead of sitting in school guessing how its done. =) More Internships for everyone!
Looking forward to see you all in May.
