View Full Version : NetRender on dual core--any special setup?
Ernest Burden 04-07-2006, 01:50 AM So I just bought a laptop with an Intel duocore processor. I need NetRender to run on it. Is there anything special I need to do to have it take advantage of the two cores?

congrats- these are real nice fast. what did you get?
i am rendering on my new dell here.
for netrender no special setup is needed, it behaves like a normal dual machine. just like a nromal pc.
cheers

I'm not sure what to expect from it. Will it render one frame faster, or two frames at the same time? Or no faster than a single core chip?
The laptop is a Toshiba Centrino Duocore 1.8Ghz with 2GB (expands to 4GB, just didn't have 2x 2GB chips available today when I bought it) with a 17" screen. It looks great. Let's see how it renders with NetRender and fr2.

NR appears to be using both cores to render a single frame at a time.

Yep, it works exactly the same as a dual-processor machine.

btw, Ernest, how come you went with the PC instead of the Aptel?

The Apple only has a 15.4" screen, the Toshiba has 17, the Apple takes up to 2GB, the Toshiba 4GB, though I'll have to buy the bigger chips later. But more than anything, it was time. I got the laptop this afternoon, its already working on images with NetRender for a client who needs them in the AM. The Apple was going to require a few hours to setup the BootCamp, load XP, hope the networking works, more time for any problems. I figured I didn't have that time to spare, better grab a decent machine and get back to work.
Also, I would be cutting the Apple's HD in half, so each OS would have a small HD.

yes that was it for me too,
apple doesnt have 17" yet. i have a nice 1900x1200pixel resolution, same as my 24".
thoshiba sounds great. as adam said it rnders one frame faster or it renders 2 buckets in fr or vray at the same time.
have fun:-)

I already am! The screen on that laptop is 'widescreen' aspect and bigger than my TV. Despite all my work, I popped my SW-Ep III DVD in in last night to see the first few minutes and it looked fantastic. It had better--a $3000 DVD player.
The NetRender work went flawlessly, and fast, so that's good. I'm not sure when I can try some fr2 buckets on it. And vRay buckets? Let's hope soon!
