View Full Version : WIP: getting earth ready for another spin
brammelo 12-28-2002, 11:03 PM Hi all,
I need to finish the image below before the end of the year - obviously.
The idea behind the picture is that earth, after one year of spinning around, needs to be refuelled before starting another cycle.
I know I have to change the texture map I'm currently using for the globe - if anyone has interesting links, please feel free to post them.
Other than that: all kinds of comment are most welcome. I need to improve this image, so go ahead and let me have it! ;-)
For those who would need it: there's a 1024x867 version at:

Thanks in advance,
BaRa

i like the concept, but maybe if it were more like it was being inflated again one of those little bike tyre nozells would be cool. also it looks like a model of the earth, it would be cool if you could somehow get a feel of the scale. as for the earth texture, you need to increase the diffusion falloff in the illumination tab, and maybe add another sphere layer for haze and atmosphere... but it's looking cool :)
edit looking at it again i'd perhaps bring the fuel nozel higher up on the earth so it's clearer what's going on... the question begs though... who's the guy filling it up? and where is he?
I like the concept as well :)
There is a reasonable Earth map and bump map and diffusion map in the C4D tex folder :)
Stu.
I've been using the Earth Atmosphere tutorial from Maxon
http://www.maxoncomputer.com/tutorial_detail.asp?tutorialID=204
as a reference when creating planets.
For textures, you could also check out NASAs "Blue Marble" project. Sorry I don't have a direct link for that handy.. I once downloaded the 16384x16384 pixel Earth textures from there, and just managed to get one of them loaded on a PC with 1Gig of RAM.. Total memory usage was a bit over 2 gigs for just the image, so be warned.. :-)
They have smaller images as well, though.

Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot for your replies and comments. Below a new image. I'm not sure if I should keep the earth model with the big rear fender (previous version), or this one. Opinions?
And mdme-sadie: the guy filling it up is actually the driver, and he just stepped into the shop - refuelling handle has an "automatic" option. So again, you will not see the guy running this earthly show ;-)
Cheers,
BaRa
Edit: I still have to include the correct text for the license plate, as well as some red lights for the rear lights and lights for the license plate. I should also add a hinge (connection between the body part and the cap).

Excellent concept and execution. The lighting seems kind of low, but it's fitting, none the less
Have a good one! ...and always have a designated driver = )
