View Full Version : Cinema NET
just_p 12-28-2002, 10:19 PM Hey,
So, from reading the manual it says Cinema 4d comes with licenses for it's net rendering system.
Just curious where exactly the client is. Is it installed by default or on the CD.
Also, does MAXON distribute stuff in mac or PC only format. e.g. can I get the PC NET clients from a Mac license?
- Kevin, wondering if he can coerce his college to install the NET client on some of the comps without NET for a nice render farm. (o:

you get three net licenses with the XL bundle, and unlimited licences with the Studio Bundle. the net clients can be on both macs and PC's (you should get both with your cd). but you only get either a mac or a pc server license with v8 (with v7 the same license worked for both the mac server and the pc server, now it's one or the other i'm afraid).
the client and the server are not installed by default, you have to install them seperately.

Hi,
Cinema 4D comes with net rendering licenses in a couple of situations (valid for Release 8):
(a) if you have the NET module
(b) if you have the XL bundle
(c) if you have the Studio Bundle
C4D's platform dependency is based on the license code, not on what can be found on the installation CD. This means that, whatever platform you're on, you can install the NET client on both Windows and PC.
There is no limit to the number of clients you can install. There is, however, a limit to the number of clients that can be used. This number depends on the kind of NET-license you have (3, 10 or unlimited).
If you want to render cross-platform, you need 1 computer (commonly called a server) that can be connected to both Windows and Macintosh OS's. You need this because the different clients need to write their results to one central place, and there's also one central place that needs to coordinate the distribution of frames.
This being said, NET rendering can only be used for rendering out animations. Stills can not (automatically) be rendered accross a network.
There are limitations to the use of NET rendering. For instance, Dynamics should be baked before you actually start rendering them out across a network. The same goes for soft IK, and for Radiosity. Other than that, NET is a great system. As always, people want more than what the system currently offers. But that's the law of the free market, I guess :-)
Cheers,

Cool, thanks *runs off to talk to the computer services dept*
So one other question.
It's an academic license, so io'd imagine we have about 25 ones for XL7 & therefore 75 NET licenses. Just wondering if the NET licenses are tied to each install/license of C4d.
Basically could I setup a 75 comp render farm or just lots of 4 comp ones?
Thanks,
- Kevin
