Hi guys, I am facing a challenge these days to create an Oil painting look which has knive cuts( knive which is used for paintings) too. Now I am already working on a toon shaded project in finaltoon so my natural reaction was to turn to an NPR renderer which could create such a look. The renderer I found was Liquid+ , which gives a watercolor painting feel to the render,of which I downloaded a Demo. My aim being to tweak it to look like oil painting.

Then as I got deeper into I realised that we cannot just use an oil texture on a geometry as brush strokes are required to usuallly overlap on other objects to make a illusion that it is hand painted. that means we have to create that effect while rendering so that one object's stroke overlaps with the other object's.

Still, I have not yet achieved the eact oil strokes but what is also an issue is the knive cuts that we have to put in to complete the illusion. One way out , I guess, would be to take a black n white image of randomn lines and apply it as a displacement map on th e final composite. But then our plan is of making an animated short film , not a single render, that brings in a lot of problems itself. to maintain that illusion in movemnt.

well, I thought guys out here might have many different ideas about creating such a render , so I am posting this thread , so We might get a chance to brainstorm about it and on the way develop a solution.

Any views on it ??
