View Full Version : My brother
(...) 12-27-2002, 06:37 PM Hi all,
For his xmas present, my brother asked me to do a CG portrait of him, using imagery that is indicative of his personality. I did it, and I think I did a halfway decent job of it, so I'm posting it here for critiques and stuff. :)
Let me know what you think of it (I'm looking for crits on the artwork and not the imagery).
The image was made in Painter Classic (and Photoshop for the layers)

Wow. I didn't think it was that bad.
I was going to post something last night, but I saw that your location is 'behind me' and it immediately freaked me out. I don't like typing with someone looking over my shoulder. Today, I got the help of a large imposing looking person to watch my back so that I could type this reply. :D
The style reminds me of heritage wall murals you'd find in southern CA or close to the Mexico border. Particularly the treatment of the folds in the clothing and the flat and solid areas of color. I've never been to Mexico, but I'm sure the style originates there (I wish I could think of an artist's name to offer as an example).
It's a fine illustration (unless of course it doesn't resemble your brother ... but how are we to know). The only thing that seems weird to me is the bend in the wrist on his right hand (on our left). To hold a knife like that I think you'd have to twist the upper torso more so that it's almost at a profile. Otherwise a more comfortable grip would be so that the back of the hand is facing us and grasping the blade so that it obscures most of it.
You could hold a blade like that with the upper torso facing the viewer, but the arms would have to be extended outward towards us. Kind of like presenting an award to someone or displaying a product in a TV commercial.
That's the only thing really ... the rest is fine for the style that I mentioned. Has your brother seen it yet? How does he like it?
