How is the speed of Maya's sub d's in 4.5? I heard they have a new approximation sub d that is more like LW's sub d's. Are these any faster then the old heirarchal ones.

It has a great push-modifier to avoid the loss of volume that occurs with subdivisons. Really it's just a Smooth-operator hooked to the polygon mesh and not true subD's. I like it alot. Clean and simple. If you really need true subDivs you can easily convert the proxy mesh when you are done.

you can make a copy of subDivs, and convert it level0 to polygen,an creat a connect between poly and proxy mesh use out mesh->in mesh, this is the best way to speed up the subdivs, all your modify in the polygen can be auto use in subdivs, including uvs, skin weight, all you dong can use in a low-res stand for the high-res.
