View Full Version : the effect from matrix when neo touches the mirror

So I'm stuck on brainstorming for an FX idea here on my first day at my internship. Basically what we're looking to pull off is almost exactly the effect from matrix when neo touches the mirror and is engulfed in chrome. (Although we're aiming for a more organic tweak to it in the end).
Since everybody's pretty busy here they put me on brainstorming for the rough idea how to pull this off... been working a bit on softbodies (as suggested in other threads), trying to move the particles from a sphere to my arm that i modelled, but it all just "happens at once" (which i don't want) instead of spreading from the fingertip and advancing up along the arm a.s.o. (the desired effect)
Extremely thankful if anybody could give me a suggestion or a tutorial link on this.

The engulfing in chrome bit could happen several ways:
1) Controlled emission of a lot of very small blobby particles, which cohere into a single surface.
2) Animated opacity ramp, with noise on the leading edge.
3) Blendshapes.
That's all that's coming to mind off of 4 hours of sleep. I would divide up the effect into the touching/deforming the mirror bit (which is softbodies), and then the being engulfed bit (for which I'd try the blobbies first).

Thanks boneDaddy for your suggestion, which really got me on the way, still there are issues.
My recent test involves a surface emitter with emission rate controlled by a ramp, the surface being a lowpoly arm with emitters tangent and normal speeds set to 0. The issue however is that the particles "pop" up, so that it all looks like stop motion...
My blobbies settings work alright for testing purposes, and the desired radius is .5
However when i try to use a ramp to make particlePP start at 0 and grow to .5 there are no particles. Strange...
Basically i guess what I'm doing here is faking fluid motion, since my goo surface is fairly even, the particles doesn't move but just pop up hence the edge of the fluid moves forward.
Has anybody got a better approach to suggest?

Hi David!
I guess you could do that with goals. Are you familiar with that? You could drive your particle goalUPP and goalVPP with your particles age. This assumes that your model has a nice uv layout but it would then make your particles travel along your mesh as they get older.
Just look in mayas help for particle goals and start experimenting.
Where are you doing your internship? Guess you´re in DG05 since my internship ended quite some time ago (I'm in dg04).

cheers Nils, that's the way to go... Working with a solution using GoalU&V now, just waiting for the filmed testshots with actors so that we have something to apply the effect on.

Nice to see that you've found a solution. I was at Swiss, then after my internship they hired me for a project they were working on and now I'm back in school for le grande final project.

nice to get hired, what's it like to work there? good? I tried to get ahold of them when applying for internship, but they weren't so hot on people skills... hehe. A guy in my class is there now anyway, maybe you met him? Mats.
Le grand project, is that the exhibition? Looking 4ward 2 that 1! ;)

Swiss is a very nice place to work at, they are really nice people. They don't seem to be very picky with who the choose for internship though. And I never met Mats. Maybe he was on the upper floor or something. le grande final project = exams project, that's all.
