View Full Version : Opteron 165 and 3ds Max
Diazepam 04-03-2006, 05:34 AM Finally got my new rig with an Opteron 165!
But I was quite dissapointed to see that Max 8 wasn't utilizing the 2nd core at all, even during my test renders. The same for Brazil.
Any ideas if this is usual? I did a search and most threads mention that 3Ds IS multi-threaded.

does windows task manager show two processors? if not, then that's your issue... brazil should use two buckets to render (same with mental ray) ... you may have to check something like "use all processors" or set number of threads to 2

I agree, check the # of processors that the system detects, if itīs only one it could be that you need to flash the mobo with the latest bios, some doesnīt support dual core until you upgrade the bios.
BTW which motherboard are you using?

Task manager shows 2 processors. But only one's being utilized, with the CPU usage constantly showing 50% (but the 1st cpu is at 100% usage).
Yea, that's what I thought about Brazil and esp Mental Ray, but they both only utilize 1 cpu at this moment. I'll go re-check my settings again, but I'm sure I've indicated to Max that its running on more than 1 cpu.
Thanks!

Yup, its set to use all processors . . .
Just for kicks, how's the scan line render go? Does it use both cores?

Nope, scanline only uses 1 core.
Blehhhh.
On a happier note, my heavy AE projects now absolutely screams! :D
Oh, and I tried softquadro-ing a 7600GT. Don't make the mistake of buying one if you're intending to. The drivers that support the 7600GT are quite recent (2006), and softquadro/Rivatuner doesn't support anything after 1.12.05, so I'm pretty much stuck. :bounce:
But I'm still happy . . . except for Max. I'm about this close to looking at XSI again.
