View Full Version : rough concept sketch (84k)
Titan 12-27-2002, 05:56 AM This is a really rough sketch I doodled in about 1/2 an hour and brought into photoshop to play with..
essentially I am working on a low poly character in 3d..(almost finished rigging her now) but this is the concept piece she was derived from..
I plan to redraw this with a lot more detail and actually make a painting out of it.....
havent posted any 2d in a while so I just thought I'd share.

Looks good Titan. I really can't find anything to critique on it other than "it's unfinished! Get to work on it now! I want to see her finished!" (Yeah, I'm one to talk huh?)
*laughs maniacally*
I like the chalky feel to it. Good work man. Where's the link to the 3D thread?

That's kool! It's simple but nasty. How did you color it in photoshop exactly? Air Brush? It has a kool Blury effect!
nice

thanks for the comments....I appreciate it...

Ageless, I created a medium gray filled layer and set its blending option to multiply above the scanned sketch...
then I simply went in and dodged most of the flesh and figure in general(on that gray layer)....created one layer above that for colors also set to multiply...and one layer above that for highlights...which I left at a normal blending option and painted solid or blurred white highlights......
its a good technique, but I did a rush job on this, I'm gonna start from scratch with the sketch and do a proper painting over it..:)
Kirt , I'm working on it buddy, thanks for the comments:beer:

*Superb* very nice sketch, could you explain better how you colored it on photoshop, i have a million drawings that i want to give them color but can't.
hey man..thanks for the compliments.....
the technique I used on this drawing is not really the traditional comic book coloring technique...its something I've learned from traditional painting and charcoal drawing as well as a fair bit of experimentation in photoshop and advice from other knowledgeable artists...
I'll give you a better breakdown of what I did here but a great tutorial for coloring artwork in photoslop can be found on Adi Granov's site: http://www.sofos.com/adi/
basically...
I started the sketch on 8.5x11 typing paper with a 10% cool grey marker...just freehand in the forms and pose(the marker gives it that cool painterly feel) you can see my marker lines in this pic.
I defined the linework with a 2h and HB pencil.
scanned the image and adjusted the levels in photoshop to give the linework more contrast and cleaner white space.
I created a new layer above that and filled it with a solid grey. I set this layers blending option to multiply so that I could see the linework beneath it.
From there it was a simple matter of using the dodge tool on the grey multiply layer with a low opacity soft round brush to create grey scale values for the skin and costume.
I then created another layer above the grey layer also set to multiply....on that layer I created some soft flesh tones here and there just to add a splash of color.
I created a 4th level above everything (normal blending mode)and painted white highlights as needed with a variety of brushes.
this is a technique I've been expirimenting with for a while, it works well for these simple sketches...with a lot more work you can get excellent detailed results...just look at Fengs website or Hawkpreys website....their work is very inspirational.
Great work! I hope you post more progress pics as you work towards a finished painting.
I find I pick up some technique just by observing the awesome work that artist post around here, but I want to thank you for taking the time to explain your method. It goes a long way for us new guys who are trying to get our bearings in Photoshop.
The Adi Granov tutorial is very helpful as well. Cheers
