Hi Guys

I am going to buy this computer
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=8735611&storeId=124&langId=124&categoryId=2040958&dualCurrId=75&catalogId=-124
I wanted to ask if I can add an extra SATA harddrive, something like this
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=007508&cid=HD.96

I was told i can't add a SATA and that i can only add a SCSI type of Harddrive

Thanks

A computer for 4500$ and they couldnt even add a DVD burner?

IMHO its better to buy a Athlon X2 based computer - it will cost you far less, and probably be even faster than this IBM-overpriced-thing.

As for the monitor it looks ok, but if your going to do some professional work (judging from the workstation specs it looks like your going to :) ) I would go for a Mitsubishi/NEC, iiyama, or EIZO/Lacie monitor, as those are more likely to have very good picture quality.

About the monitor - IBM 20+ inch monitors are OK - they are IBM branded Sony tubes of the "G" series. So not top of the line but OK. I find it awkward that the actual model is not mentioned. The most common problem with these IBM monitors is that they don't have a deep enough black level. There are several pages around the web with Physical changes you can make "under the hood" to fix this issue (but it is a known issue).

I don't suppose you can get a look at this monitor before you buy it right?

Why have you decide on this choice of machine?

It appears to me you either you are paying too much for the workstation, or not enough for the monitor. The balance is'n't right.

I'd go for a better priced machine, that does not mean slower etc. as I'm sure you can get a good fast machine for a lot less, and put more money into the budget for the screen.

Hi guys

The Machine itself....i am getting it with a Tech Bursary fund. The other stuff i buy my self. :)

The monitor i was thinking was a good buy because of the size 21 inchs at that price its good deal.

as for the dvd burner i wanted to buy eather a LG or Plextor and they don't have them.

Now what i have been thinking was that I get one of those PCI SATA Controller and hook up a SATA dvd burner and a SATA Harddrive.

My question now is will the dvd burner ...burn alright (burn at the high speeds) with it being connected through a pci card??

Thanks

Why go with SATA for your DVD burner? Just curios. Especially since you will be hooking it up to the PCI bus anyway. It wont be any faster than your standard IDE PATA device... Also, most likely the SATA DVD drive you're thinking of getting is SATA 150, which is really not al lthat much faster than normal PATA/IDE. So again I ask why?

The only possible advantage I can see, is the use of those nice small cables that SATA provides, aside from that there is practically no gain from using SATA (EDIT: For this purpose..), IMO...

I wasn't sure if there was an advantage with IDE vs SATA......i figured since i am going to buy a 2 port pci controler for SATA...might as well buy a dvd burner thats SATA as well

All these terms are new to me right now.....I have no clue to what the difference is. I just know that SATA is newer and IDE is older. ( i may be wrong)

Lets say for example that you guys bought this PC (ignore the fast that the computer is over priced and the monitor sucks). And you wanted a extra dvd burner and harddrive....what would you do? knowing that the motherboard only supports Ultra320 SCSI HArdDrives.

Why would you buy this over a BoXX????????

Indeed ;) You'd end up spending about the same (for faster hardware) + get good support and guys that know what they're doing..

EDIT: Typo... Unless ed, you think your support is god like? :)

$4.6k+tax for a 3.4gig xeon with 20" screen and a gig of memory? A cheap althon x2 will perform better than that thing.

hah :P

I think we're all in agreement that grabing a Boxx based system is going to be a better buy..

I don't have a choice in the system.....this is the one they are giving me...ok...so that makes this BOX pretty nice......I just want to know------ "Lets say for example that you guys bought this PC (ignore the fast that the computer is over priced and the monitor sucks). So please if you guys have any suggestions in what i can do that would be great. Thanks

Buy a 39.99 dvd burner and a 110 dollar 250+ GB SATA/IDE drive and install it yourself.

Hi Ed

Thanks.....i actually thought that, the people on this forum were making fun of me.....i didn't know BOxx is a company.

If I had known earlier i would have definately come to you for my computer needs. The reason I got the IBM was because I am getting this through a school tech bursary and so they only work with specific companies. Again if I had known early I would have definately mentioned Boxx.

I will keep you in mind though.

(I am looking at the website right now)

Thanks

Hunteri
