View Full Version : Render Test - Subsurface Scattering skin
rush123 04-01-2006, 09:20 PM Inspired from the conversations with Sil3 re SSS studies and Messiah 2.4 on messiah’s icr, I’ve attached my first attempt at SSS skin, using the Butch object from the samples folder. If anyone wants my shader flow just ask and I’ll upload it in the thread. Comments welcome.

Ack! And I'm off irc for another month or so!
I'd love to have a look. Is that with the new basic node?

After some more study, and even more tweaking I’m getting closer to achieve a more realistic skin look, at least I think so. Again comments welcome, and that’s for the encouragement dobermunk
Thoughts?

From the image its hard to tell if that glowing armpit problem that Wegg encountered is there. Are you experiencing that? (His muffin dame SSS kept its bright values even in shadow) It'd be good to know how that's working for you...

could you give some settings please, I really want to dig into messiah now & get creative but I just can't seem to get it to do what I want......skin would be a great start as the translucency settings are hurting my brain.
...if only we had an FPrime equivilant, it would make things so much easier to experiment.

Yes i agree that will be great if yoiu share your setting, specially i admit i dont know how to applied the different nodes in the same object, only change colors!

Ok I've got a close-up of the armpit..
I got a couple of problems I’m trying to work out, one being softer shadows, also the lighting problem to the side of his peck. But I’m not sure of the problems Wegg had, but I’m going to experiment with the lighting and ask him later.
Thanks.
PS
Re my setting, I’m just going to clean up the shader flow a little bit more and post the file. The only problem is that I’m using a AoN node for the veins, and I’m going to see if its possible to do veins using ‘in the box’ nodes instead. As this project was always ‘what could be done with the 2.4 renderer in terms of SSS and skin for novices like me’.

A post in Chikega’s SSS thread reminded me that I never did post my setting as I promised, so I had a spare 5 mins, made a few more tweaks and here is a pic and setting.
