Hi
I want to crate an animation as real as possible of a volcano erupting. I have modelled the volcano with nurbs, smoke using fluids and particles for lava and rocks…
Now what I am not sure is how to create the rest of the environment, mountains and grass, trees just to make look more realistic… what would be the best solution All 3D or Digital matte? The scene start with some horses (3d) running free on the field then the close up to the volcano- explosion – then the horses running away from the lava and rocks.

Is a bit complex I think, I have the horses animated, my only problems is the environment… Any suggestions, how to approach this shot?

Thanks

Hernando

Ps I will post some render later on .

If the camera angle doesn't change more than 90 degrees, I say 3D matte painting, or at least lots of alpha planes with painted. Sounds like it will do the job for your shot.

And if your angle does go 180, or 360, I guess you can expand your alpha plane trees to X'es, like in-game trees.

Can you upload a rough sketch of the type of shot angle ye're after?

this is what i got so far...

this is the main plan... i will zoom in to the top of the volcano then the horses

I'd definately go with matte painting/camera projection.

The March 3D world has a nice tutorial on how to do the lava eruption. Might wanna chck it out.
