View Full Version : The Gunslinger - 3dsmax & Zbrush
vampeta 03-31-2006, 08:31 AM http://www.kira-network.com/gunslinger/step-00.jpg
This thread will be my first serious attemp to create a "realistic" looking human face.
I have almost figured out that my skills are extreem bad in anatomy and human forms, and if you donīt know to do something right you have to learn and practice it... not? :D
As the topic said this will be the sequel to my latest work "THE DARK TOWER" Iīm also working on a demo real 4 my homepage where i want to include this after finishing.
My first work with ZB was during the "SPECTACULAR" challenge... more and more i have started to love this tool, but i have to say that i know only 60% of itīs abilitys.
How i work::
http://www.kira-network.com/gunslinger/step-02.jpg
The basic shape is done in 3DSMAX. Itīs normaly a box with 4 faces on each side
I bring it in shape by moving vertices
then i refine the shape using a polygon slice/cut tool. (this is normaly the hardest part)
at the end i make sure that i have texture coordinates on my obj. I use normaly spherical mapping and adjust the coordinates by hand with the build in unwrap modifier
CHECKLIST::
Basic shape looks ok
Enough Polygons
propper texture coordinates
Then i can switch to ZBRUSH :D
http://www.kira-network.com/gunslinger/step-01.jpg
In the end i will export my model back to 3DSMAX and render the scene with mental ray

Hey man looks good. If I were you maybe have a look at more referance for lips. They look a bit off. Also, maybe revise the way the ear joins the head, it seems like the lobe is connecting too early if you see what I mean?

I made some small adjustments on the ear and the lips. Thanks 4 the hint MrJames ;)

I was been thinking about the scene... how to place the character, the environment, the light etc... Here is a quick sketch.

A first test with Mental Ray & SSS fast skin shader.
This is my very first tryout with this shader, but i like how the result looks. There are some problems with the eyes and some small textured areas, also the lips looks a bit distorted... but i have the feeling iīm on the right way.
Have fun!

Great job. I've been following the Dark Tower thread, and being a SK superfan, I appreciate the work put in and the result is fantastic. As for the Gunslinger, I think Roland could use with some more forehead wrinkles; the wrinkles at the tip of the nose don't belong, though.
I hope you add some longer hair for the head - more Roland-like, I think.
Great work 'grizzling' him up; he reminds me of a slightly-younger beat-up Roy Schieder (Jaws).
Keep it up, great thread and work.

Good job so far. Small critique is that some of the wrinkles don't much up. Parts of his face look younger and others look older. Also, the wrinkles themselves are in places where the face just doesn't crease :) Good job though overall ;)

Hi man, nice to see the piece coming along. The lips still need a little work in my opinion, you need more of a contour in the bottom lip for a start. They look very flat on the face, where in reality they should protrude a bit more. The bottom lip has a bit ore of an over hang before it goes in and meets the chin. Hopefully you can see what I mean, if not, just ask and I'll draw a diagram ...
Keep the updates rolling ;)

i find the colours of your renders quite odd, are you using a TFT? check your colour profiles,

Hi & thanks 4 your feedback
At the moment iīm doing only test renderings to figure out what kind of possibulitys i have. I agree with the wrinkels and of course he will have longer hair ;) i hought on a mix between Clint Eastwood & Terence Hill...

Thank you, nice hint!
I think i know what you mean, letīs see if can refine this ;) and by the way the whole face looks at the moment a bit blown up because my displacement map for the hair has an overeal brighter gray as background, (i just figured that out this morning )
I had also a look on your Portfolio... REALY NICE WORK!

Iīm still working on the face and i agree with you. In the end i want a face with very oversubscribed contours... maybe a bit like an altered cartoon charactar with a realistic touch.

Hey thanks a lot... thatīs realy very helpfull :bounce: :D
I hadnīt much time yesterday but i fixed a few things.
I also discovered a bigger problem with the lips. My lowpoly model had only polygons up to the inner edge, whish is not going enough into the inner mouth. I would like to ad a slice on the inner polygon ring but i donīt know how. I can do it in 3dsmax but i would lose my ZB modifications because of a different Polygon-count.
Well... i thing this Character will have a closed mouth ;) (or i found a better solution... any Ideas? )
Thank you again!

Looking much better Preuss!
I think the wrinkles are a bit much on the neck and the nose and maybe in the cheek area, but I know on the neck and the nose. I think that u want to get the wrinkles in the neck to go horizontally, but don't take my word for it though, coming along smoothly though, keep it up, good luck with this model!

He looks to be smiling a bit. I was under the impression Roland hardly ever smiled. :) Something to do with the corners of the mouth and the look in the eyes.

Hey! Its getting there now! I'm a great fan of your work and the level of detail you put into things is gobsmacking! I still think there needs to be more attention to the eyes ( not sure how far you are with this ) I think if you have photorealistic eyes you can get away with some of the other not so detailed bits in a model ( i'm talking in general here ) Also i think he looks just a tad to bumpy. Almost looks like hes got some walts going on there! Not pretty :argh: Hehe. Keep it up though.
