Hi everyone,

I'm new here and have just started learning about 3D modeling -- modeling that goes beyond arranging primitives in a scene, anyway. :)

I'm trying to model a cat-person type character, and I kind of like where this is going, but there are some things I'm not sure about.

Here's the render, no textures and default light:

And here's a screen of the scene itself: http://www.fawxie.com/desmond-screen.png

Thing is, he doesn't look very cat-like, does he? I'm also not sure about the eyes, or how to get both a convincing eye-lid and a convincing cat-eye shape. The mouth is bothering me, too, but it's a very tricky area to model and I'm not sure how to approach it... there're also the ears, and I'm thinking that I'll model them as seperate pieces and group them with the head, even though it's cheating-ish.

The model itself was done with polygons and has recently been converted to a sub-division surface.

Am I going in the right direction? Any friendly pointers would be greatly, greatly appreciated! I'd love to finish this, but it's got me a little paralyzed.

Thanks for any help! :D

you are right, it looks more like a cartoon fox than like a cat. the nose and the mouth part is boxy, use some more edge loops near EYES and NOSE and make it flow smooth.

The lines near the cheek portion needs to flow more organically, look at some more good references of cat from the internet and you will get the idea.

it is a good start, waiting for ur updates.

Update: http://www.fawxie.com/wip-floatingface.png

I shortened and rounded out the muzzle and worked on the bridge of the nose, which helped. Then I decided to work on the topology in polygons, converted back, and got a bunch of extra faces.... a duplicate set of faces, right on top of the others.

I deleted them, but I can't get rid of this one no matter what I do. It doesn't shade, Maya tells me I can't delete border edges, Delete Vertices doesn't work, deleting the "face" doesn't work... help? :scream:

Update: http://www.fawxie.com/des-wip-02.jpg

I think I got rid of the face by merging all the verts together... here's hoping there aren't any unpleasant side effects.

C&C would be greatly appreciated. :)

Truely looks awsome, you are doing a very good job since you are just beginning.
