Well, this is the 1st time I do a matte painting..maybe it'snot so realistic, or doesn't look like sunrise<or sunset..whatever..:D>but I really luv it!
Pleasing to hear your comments, it'll help in my next pic.!
this is the original pic:
I dunno how to use 3Dmax, so everything's done with Photoshop Cs!
hope you all like it!:)

the problem at your image is that the lightning at the mountain is wrong and not matching the sun behind it. you need some more contrast between the trees in the front and the wood on the hill too.

I'm not a matte artist, but like a lot to be inspired here. But I think Tobias is right about the light...in your original photo it cames from left, thats why the trees are colorful...in your matte with sun behind the hill, the trees should be darker, close to black...I don't think you need 3DMax to do matte painting, only if you want to use some 3d objects in your scene or animated cg water! Anyway, if you are not aiming for realism I think your is image is quite beautiful!

If you look into a sun even with camera, the image would be very contrasting.
The hills would be almost black. In other case there would be to big exposure.
But it's not bad
You see what I mean?
Don't make the water so bright, it's almost white, it almost doesn't look like water anymore.

I think now it is better! In spite of hte hills should be darker it would take of any volume on trees! I have seeing some professional using lights in wrong popsition to make composition more interesting! Water looks painted yes, but as I said it is beautiful! Do you have any 3d aplication to render some water? (3dmax, C4d, Maya, bryce, vue or blender?) this last one is for free! Do you want to paint water? Why not give a try with a second photo blend? As I said before, beautiful work!
