Can you be a little more specific? You want to use them together in one rendering or seperately in different camera angles?

You can only use 1 image background per viewport. If you make a window with a top viewport and a window with a side viewport, you can set seperate bg's for that view, but remember it has to be an orthographic view and one of Side Top or Front views.
By the viewport indeed. You can, for example, have 2 top views simultaneously, each with their own background image.
Tought came across when reading this thread. I tested and it worked. Can be useful if at some point I'm doing something that requires for example a) a schema of the cityblock and b) a schema of particular house in that cityblock together.

Folks are right on the multiple views / multiple images, but unlike lightwave the images are not linked to views. Thus, if you change views inside a window, the image stays the same as whatever you've loaded. I like to switch views a lot so this didn't work for me. I found that instead of multiple separate images, I merge my front and side views side by side on one image. That way I can change views using the same image and everything stays easy to use.
The above isn't clear at all... so here:

That's an example. Move the model in the front view to match the left side, and move it in the left view to match the right side. Then the model stays in place, you can change views, and you don't need to keep multiple windows open.
Hope that helps.

Thism might be obvious, but what the heck, I'll mention it anyway.
I do what Kattkieru does, using one graphic as a background, with both the side and front view in one viewport. Often I start out with a cube. Next, in Object mode, I do a Duplicate Linked (Alt D) of the cube, so I have two copies. I position one over the front view, and one over the side view. I rotate one of the two cubes 90 degrees on the appropriate axis. Then, in Edit mode, I can work on one view, and then the other, by switching from one duplicate to the other. That way, I don't have to move the object back and forth as I work.

why do it so cumbersome? I have two images and two viewports, If switching between these views is so annoying to me, I make two new custom views, model01 and 02, 01 being the maxed out of one view and 02 maxed out of the other one. I can then use ctrl left/right/up/down to switch if i have to.
