Title: The Wax - Dragon
Name: Natascha Roeoesli
Country: Greece
Software: Photoshop
In ancient times, Wax - Dragons have been known to humans as sources of great wisdom.
Some of their body parts consist of wax elements and are very weak to physical attack. Thus those parts are covered with a transparent shell (specially the chest area - horns and parts of the head) which is supposed to gain them at least a minor protection against predators and heat.
Due to their great weakness and the fact that they are not meant to fight but rather serve as sources of inspiration and advisors, they have been driven very close to extinction.
It takes a long time until a Dragon of this kind makes friendship with a human being. A symbiosis which is however essential for their survival.
They are creatures of snakelike, delicate appearance and feed only on plants. Their character is very tender and protectful which in terms makes them even more vulnurable and weak.
Once a Wax - Dragon has found a human companion it stays loyal until it's death.
****
This was actually meant to be finished for Exposé but due to work I didn't have time to finish it earlier.
It's Photoshop CS2 from scratch till the end and started as a speed point of the girl. It was then when I realized that I have to expand my mind and start painting other creatures. The story of that particular dragon started to form when I started to think about how to paint and invent my own dragon.
I see this as a start to more creature and nonhuman elements sipping into my work :)
As always, I hope you enjoy :)
Matt: Thanks a lot in the cc and feedback for the Dragon!
As promised, some close-ups at 100% and 50% mixed:
http://www.tascha.ch/artwork/gallery/closeups/closeups_dragon.jpg
Sidenote: I have over 30 Steps of this saved..my comp is about to crash I think >_<
EDIT:
I forgot to add - I didn't use any reference or material to stud for this but two really bad out of focus and yellowish fotos of my hands. They do however look nowhere near delicate and slender as hers and I don't have long nails either. I am most probably going to post them along as soon as this is accepted into the forum :)

Fantastic job -- and the wax effect on the surface of the dragon is perfect. And, of course, a beautiful woman. Excellent all the way around.

Tascha! I can't stop looking at this painting. It is my favourite of yours so far for sure. I just adore the lighting and the connection between the two characters.
I struggle with fabric, but you paint fabric so well, it looks so delicate and you capture the weight so wonderfully.
The dragon looks wonderful too! You have captured the texture, especially on the neck area, very waxy! :D
I impatiently wait for your next painting!
Truly inspirational!
I'm not an "replying person" but i can't pass this thread without droping my extreem admiration of your work! :)

Very, very good image. I find you have progressed so much since the first images I know from you and which made their way into the CGChoice Gallery. The last pictures you uploaded are way better in my opinion.
I particularly like the dragon here - really, really cute !
Only two small crits : the arms seem a little bit sketchy compared to the detail in the rest of the picture. I also find her hairstyle a little bit too cool and loose compared to her way of dressing. Although the hair is absolutely super, I still find that a little more sophisticated hairstyle would have matched her dress better.
Anyway, you have another winner here !

hehehe.. congrats Tascha... two pics on CG front page at once!! This has turned out amazingly well, from that rough sketch you posted a while ago... and ho ho, do I see some of the silk you did for the tutorial in 2d artist mag? *grins* that tut will come in very handy, and you are definitely getting better with every piece you do. I'd have liked some hint of a background in amongst the cloud, but i know how long you'd had this piece around, so I don't blame you for opting for a more generic background. I love her hair and the shape of her eyes too, you do the most amazing eyes. Every time I see a piece of yours it really does encourage me to keep at digital art, seeing what its capable of. Fantastic!
EDIT:
I forgot to add - I didn't use any reference or material to stud for this but two really bad out of focus and yellowish fotos of my hands. They do however look nowhere near delicate and slender as hers and I don't have long nails either. I am most probably going to post them along as soon as this is accepted into the forum :)

I love your work. The girl is amazing. A couple of crits though, I think the dragon gets a bit too soft towards the top. Also the arm/claw coming in from the right side does a good job of balancing out the entire image but it looks a bit odd to me. Other than that fantastic work. 5 Stars! BTW love your image of Alice. The faces you give your women are very seductive.

thank you :] the idea was to have the dragon in some kind of wrapped around composition around her - to emphasize the protection - which is in term kind of sarcastic because the dragon actually needs her protection too. (hehe - I am starting to babble..)
RuihongTang
yeah it's an asian inspired girl this time. At least more asian looking then western. I am really fond of asian elements and plan to incorporate them some more in my future paintings :]
Glad you like it

Thanks again Matt! Actually I was considering that but I kinda like it as a more designish element..and staying in the background. It was definately not lazyness but a decision to leave it like that. :]

no kidding Katherine, this went to so many changes when I first started painting. I am definately planing on doing an overview/step-by step of this (same for summer actually)

that's a great compliment as I was trying to give him some kind of sensuality from the start - he changed quite a bit during the process - from looking extremely young to older for example. I tend to think that I had the sensuality in there from the start..at least somewhat :]

until now I have mostly done character illustrations of mostly humans. I really enjoyed playing around with a creature for ones and will definately do more.
enialadam
I am glad that the connection somewhat works. I tried to show a bond between them in both composition and some little elements (like he taking the flower from her hand without her being conserned at all (looking at the viewer instead) or she having one of his (no clue what they are called) wrapped around her finger like a weddingring (not sure if people actually notice that though ;))
The neck are is actually not covered by that shell like his head (which is probably a bit unrealistic but ah well..) thus looking a bit more waxy

ah she is not a godess - but she actually looks a bit like one? Maybe I overdid a bit with the headpiece
Farsh
thank you - I am also quite happy with the light (venturing more into special light situation). I am not really sure if that light as really correct, sometimes it's really hard for me to imagine it and it might be a bit wonky here and there.
Euphony
Dan thank you! yes - I tried to incorporate the color that appears a bit blueish around her shoulder (the shadow) into other parts but I don't really have the fully grasp of it yet..I am also happy how it turned out there though.

Many thanks - I though it might create a nice arch (arc?) around the girl with her floating arm clothing and the dragon :]
Ok and as promised here are the crappy references I used for the hands.
our stupid digital camera is broken - the stop you get to autofocuse the sharpness before taking the shot is not there anymore (button is broken) and it gets almost impossible to create sharp pictures :(
Really need to start saving up for a new camera. Well it was/is an old one anyway and I am actually hoping I can borrow some of the digital cameras of my parents..

Thanks a lot for the feedback Gitte. I find it hard to add details to arms because to me, specially on girls they tend to not have pronounced muscles I can shade. Or if I do they look too manly to me. Something I definately have to improve though.
What do yu mean by more sophisticated? More strict? or More complicated? =)
She actually had two buns covered with a head veil and some of this asian pins in it to start of with. But I thought she looked too much martial artist like that :D
BlinCk
many thanks Jorge =)
DDS yes I tend to think of it as some kind of portrait done for them. Thus the straight foward look of the girl. To be honest though - I haven't been painting a straight into the camera face in ages and I thought the 3/4 is kind of overdone by me right now. Besides to have the dragon not in full frontal was quite more challenge for me (just shows how little understanding I have of dragon bonestructure yet ;))
Zepyhri
@_@ that "h" in your name really caused me troubles :p I had to retype your handly about 4 times. I actually had some ancient ruins in there and much more complicated clouds (you will see that if you are taking a look at the step-by-step of this which I am planing. However I thought it was too crowded for the already quite cramped canvas.
Actually I started this piece then got the request for the tutorial and thought why not reuse some of the colors and elements I used in this - so shame on me ;)
Thanks very much for the lengthy comment Sam. <3
DDS: I will definately put something together
Thanks for all the feedback!

Hey Kyena
Really like a lot of what I'm seeing here - nice control on materials, interesting color scheme, the fact that it's a speed paint workup is great - keeps the freshness of that whith the added detail work. Not totally sold on the composition with the dragon clipping the top corner and the disembodied hand coming in the right side, but I know what you're going for. I checked out your portfolio, really like the Soulcollector face too (as featured in your banner) - really beautifully handled.
Kudos!

Ohh I relly loved this piece, First, the girl gained my attention:love: , I love her haircut and specially her eyes, a very mystical and sensual character, but also kinda powerfull. Then comes the dragon, it's a very original concept you have there, and you can actually see the tenderness in his eyes and in his shape in general.

many thanks! I definately have a lot of work to do with composition. I am actually a good photographer when it comes to having an eye for composition but it is certainly a totally different story if you have to add the elements yourself. I am guessing you would have shown more of the dragons body? and not have him cut into the painting like that?
Thanks for checking the portfolio :)
Diegoth
uh no..I would say I am getting better with certain subjects but oh god there is so much I haven't attempted yet and I am just now getting back to my sketchbook and doing some environment tryouts. I am definately nowhere close to be well rounded and I think perfection is something you can't and shouldn't achieve. Thanks a lot for the compliment though .:]

ok - that is pretty much what an artist doesn't want to hear (at least not me).
I have a whole lot of styles I paint in - from quite rough/painterly (card art) to semi-realistic. I am lately experimenting with DoF, Light and also trying out different setting for hard edged brushes which pretty much created the effect and style of this.
I am not really sure who I could have copied exactly nor do I intend to copy anyones style. I consider it quite an honor if an artist has his/her own recognizable style.
Just to recap again - I am not trying to copy anyones style I am just trying to understand what subject I am painting.

Hey Tascha, I've been hoping to see a new one from you soon, and HO-O-LY MOLY, you did not fail to impress. Looks like Linda's gonna have some steep competition one of these days :D . This is definately one of your best I've seen so far. O yeah, you were quite humble when you said youre hands aren't as delicate as the girl in the pic. As far as I can tell (through the blur on the photos), you've got absolutely lovely hands... and such damn talented hands they are as well. Maybe one day when I'm all grown up and have enough money to travel the world, I'll come and visit you in Greece and hopefully have the privelage of shaking those talented hands  Anyway, before you start thinking I'm some kinda weirdo, well done, and five stars from me :applause:

I definately don't want to compete with anyone..I don't really like to compare me with other artists either (maybe the reason I am having a hard time really getting into the challenge thing :]
I honestly tend to think I got stubbly fingers..and it makes it quite a pain to use them as references too. I think having fake french manicured nails some years ago helped me understand the form and shape of nails though ;)
If we are still situated in Greece then you are definately welcome!

Many thanks. I think it doesn't really show in color chosing or detail but it took me extremely long to get the hands that far. I normally don't have the patience to really "think" about them enough to paint them realistically. In this case they are very exposed which meant I wanted to have them at least look partically good or better then in my older paintings. :]

Thanks a lot =)

thanks - I really like painting fabrics and clothing!

Hey Jen! Haven't talked to you in a while :]
"something to do with you having gorgeous eyes" hehe says the girl with the gorgeous avatar ;)
I am VERY fascinated by eyes in general. It's that one thing I notice first while meeting someone. I think they can show a lot of the personality of that particular person.
It's eyes and music that makes me remember people (which is probably quite strange). But if I think of someone I remember their eyes first and like I said a special song I have associated to that particular person.
And damn girl, I found your wip thread the other day. You are improving in heaps and jumps still. It's a real joy to watch the thread.

I think that is pretty much ok (about the bug feel). Part of the idea was to have it's body covered with a transparent shell at parts to protect the softer elements that lay underneath.
Tilstrom
thank you :]

This will hopefully soon be available as print. I changed the look of her face veil quite a bit during the progress. It was at one part totally covering - then it was very thing showing the features underneath but lastly I ended up with something in between. I also think it adds to the mistory of the girls origin to not show her face fully. I was a bit worried that I might not have pulled off enough character in her face with only having to work with her eyes.

Thanks a lot! :)

Thanks to you as well Ralph :]

May hello! :D
I am trying to get a lot of different transitions in my works now and I think it really improves the overall quality in this. It's really important to not have all clean but also have very harsh edges in there mixed with all different kinds of shading weight (not really sure how to put it). Yup - did you send something in btw? For Exposé4?
damdischink
that's actually a comment I haven't had before - I hope that's a good thing :]

Hallo Milàn - klar :)
I will look through the files and put something together. I have to admit though that while painting clothing I am quite a lot relaying on happy accidents to get a good base. In this case it was the fact that I started with a low flow big brush roughing in that part and it naturally created folds that looked to me like the ones transparent clothing would create.
I most of the time let the painting guide me when it comes to things like that and not the other way round. Within the idea and background story I have in mind I pretty much let the parts like clothing shape themself into existance.
You will also notice that it actually looks pretty much like a mess from closer up :D
Like I mentioned - I'll put something together asap.

Hey, that's cool by me... I reckon that's probably the makings of a great artist. I didn't realy mean to compare you to anybody, as every artist is usualy unique in his own style, but with all these compliments comin at you left, right and centre, I guess I wanted to compliment you in a way that'll show you how much I admire your work  . Anyhoo, it's almost 3 in the morning here, so I gues I'd better go to sleep. Tarra :wavey:

I'm sorry, but I am speechless. I can't think of anything more original to say than "Wow! You are so phenominal, and I am truly jealous." I know everybody says that in more or less those words, but your work is really beautiful, and if I found any flaw in it I would have to make something up just to be spiteful, not that anyone is perfect, but not just this piece, but your other work that I've seen is so far beyond what I can do that I'd sure be embarrassed to show you anything of mine.
