This is a 2D concept piece I have been working on for potential submission to a few concept art mags and galleries. The idea was an image where one machine was destroying another.

It began as a grey marker sketch on bristol board. Then it was inked using .005 and .05 microns. Last, it was brought into photoshop for some contrast tuning and potential coloring.

My question is this, should I add the color or should it remain just line work? I began laying color on it but didn't spend much time. If there are other concerns let me know, any comments or critique will help - I have another image with more color laid if anyone is interested in taking a look I will post it.

Thanks a lot -

I really like the rough background texture and the contrast of colors you have so far. They dont clash or conflict with the image at all....FINISH IT!!

Thanks Gary - I will be laying down a few more colors tonight to see if it is worth putting the time in.

I would like to submitt it to the Concept Book - any other comments on the piece? Suggestions or critiques?

Decided to continue the colors. I am right in the middle of it, but I wanted to post a progress pic. . .

This is about 1 hour after the color test above.

After another hour -
Began adding more maroon tones in the metal and blue tones in the lighted areas. The flatter shades had some yellow hues added to give some color variation without desaturating the image.
Also continued to play with the notion of more lights on the 'bot. I added some green lights that will help illuminate some areas later on - I considered makig all the lights green but the red seems a little more exterme in the head area, green lenses softened the impression of the robot, made it look less violent.
Anyway - here is a shot of the current stage of the piece :

Any thoughts on improving the image as it develops would be great - thanks!

My only thought is the guy ripping the tubes off doesn't stand out at all, he just blends in with the big robot. Would adding a more red hue to his armor help him stand out? Perhaps some dramatic rim lighting from the steam on his armor? I think I may like him with only the one red eye in the middle, adds more personality.

It looks fantastic though, really cool idea and composition

Thanks for the comment Zyrinx.
I do intend to develop the humanoid much more - he willl be the last thing I paint. I am totally with you on the rim light style, I would like him to stand out from the spider-bot in the end piece.
About the Eye - I think you are on to something here. I will take out the color on the others to draw focus to the larger and make it seem more important. I should be able to do another few hours on this tonight so I will put those ideas into practice and see how they look!

More thoughts on improving the image as it develops would be great - thanks!

Put another 45 minutes on the colors. I tried a few things with the humanoid, I am still working on him, the larger bot recieved some more detailing and light. This image is a little larger than the others so you can see a few more details in the armor chipping and peeling.

Originally I was condsidering the parchemnet texture only for the background. I have thought about a few other possibilities, but the forground elements get the attention first.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions you may have. . .
