When the name appears at the beginning of the movie, a cloud of gas appears behind the name...any ideas on how to create a gas effect like that. It slowly swirls around, creating very cool shapes and glows.

I work with Lightwave 3d and Adobe After Effects.

I haven't seen the animation, but the shapes look a lot like fractals. www.apophysis.org is a powerful freeware application which you may find very interesting. It can render out frames for an animation too, although the GUI leaves a lot to be desired from when I last tried it.
