Hello, I am new here and I am pretty new to 3D
Anyways this is my first rendering with Brazil, (max5) :)

Good effort. Have you tried the wax shader in the advanced Brazil material? It has a Sub surface scattering effect that might give this a little more believability. IMHO the candle looks a little too solid giving it more of a stick of dynamite appearance. Keep it up.

When it comes to modelling objects that are based on native primitives, the best thing to do is make yourself a chipping tool (any piece of geometry) and boolean it to make little dents and chips in the candle. Then, with some careful modelling around the chips, you can easily create the effects of wax pieces. Its also needs a slight taper at the top and a visible rim, as normally these sort of candles have always got some form of crater around the "fuse", dunno the right word in english now... anyway, the background is great, just need to tweak the candle.

it is using the wax shader!? :surprised
and I moddeled it after a candle in my living room, which didn't taper or have a rim or anything but I will fool around with the model some more :D
thnx guys!

Hi JohnM,
I agree with DJ Bindhi, the candle looks a bit too solid. The texture is very nice already, but i think some subsurface scattering will improve it :)
Keep up the good work!

I have realized this a lot recently. When your creating art... art to appeal to people, you cant model exactly what you see. I see a lot of basic stuff, a lot of plants that are very simetrical, a lot of really interesting stuff. For example, say I see a sky that has like 600 clouds, all basically the same shape (just saw this so it is fresh in my memory) and look tiled. I thought it looked really cool, but if I were to paint or render or model that, people would say "your tiling is showing, make it more unique and disperse". you have to appeal to how people will recognize and see it, which a lot of times means changing it from how you originally saw it to make it more believable and interesting as art.

If you are using the wax shader try messing with the candle's geometry and the shader settings to maximize the SSS effect. Perhaps try adding another cylinder within the candle (simulating the translucent "epidermal" layer) to give the sss samples something to collide with and "warm up" the side of the candle directly exposed to the light. Hope that helps.

Well as I see it. it is a great candle. Basic although!!! Remember that there are scenes that call for props. Good job.. Nice composting too..

I did some more work on this project :D
